Hello ,

Greetings from Moradabad, India.
Last week I was telling you about some embarrassing incident in Delhi, you can read it here.

Since then I have moved on to Moradabad. It is not a famous city on the tourist trail, it's not even on the tourist trail. And lets face it with a name like Moradabad - what good could there be, it sounds like an evil city from Lord of the Rings, perhaps where Darth Vader has a holiday home.

Which reminds me it's almost Halloween time.. Are you ready. Last chance to stock up is now..

It has a nickname in India, they call it the Brass City. So the boy from Steel City (Sheffield) is making that trip. There is no airport there so you either drive or go by train.

So train it was, at some ungodly hour I check out of a ridiculously luxurious Delhi hotel and head by taxi to Old Delhi railway station. Oh boy, this is from one extreme to the next.
The station is teeming with humanity of every ethnicity and type you ever saw or never saw. I'm the only white face for sure. There are bodies everywhere sleeping mostly or stacking sacks pushing huge piles of boxes or trying to sell each other all manner of stuff. Porters equipped with nothing more than a red jacket and a head scarf hassle for jobs. I'm going with Chatterjee our main India agent, who is even a little phased by this. Somehow we are an hour early, which is fine, the people are all polite and friendly (and sleepy) I don't feel in the least bit frightened, except for the bloody rats running about beneath our seats and between our feet. Since no-one else seems to worry I try not to. A tannoy announcement keeps telling us it is rude and unhygienic to spit, but everyone seems to be chewing betel nut and spitting with abandon. Then some train details are given in Hindi, followed by "Inconvenience is deeply regretted". So that was the longest hours wait I can remember.
Finally the train arrives, which is a relief since Chatterjee told me it is not unusual to be several hours late.

This is real India, actually I'm loving it. We crush on to the train and there is no system to tell you which carriage is which number, different railway staff give us different information. We are travelling second class AC, there is no first class. Standard class has no windows just bars, benches and stuffed to capacity. Finally we find the carriage, it is an AC sleeper. Four bunk beds two by two and a huge fan rattling away.
Several people seem to be occupying our beds already by Chatterjee doesn't seem to be concerned we all cram in.

Turns out our carriage is the only one with a working power socket and they all want to charge phones. It's ancient the trains here are up to 60 years old this one looks like it's all of that.

Finally at a leisurely pace the train eases out of the station.. We can sleep and blankets and cushions are provided. Actually it's not too bad trundling through rural India passing peaceful and pretty little stations, farming folk in the fields and the odd monkey.

Was it worth the trip to Moradabad?
I will update you next week.

Take care.
See you next week.
