Welcome, and a Happy New Year- We Celebrate 100 Years.

It’s great to be able to welcome you to the first newsletter of the year, reminding you about the College Old Boys-Queens Birthday Centennial Weekend. We Celebrate 100 Years. Planning was well underway 8 months ago and has continued during the break. I’m happy to say that things are on track for the weekend. No doubt we will reveal more detail over the next 4 months, but the main events have been covered off.

We can confirm that all senior games will be played at the Arena. The ‘Bevan Jones Trophy’ will be contested between Kia Toa in both the Senior A’s & B’s, Pressies will contest the ‘Tim Henry Cup’ against Te Kawa, and the Colts will play Marist.

Apart from the games, the costs of a $75.00 ticket for the main events such as the Centennial Opening (Friday 31st May) , Formal Dinner (Saturday 1st June) and Sunday Brunch & Closing (Sunday 2nd June), is certainly a good prize.

300 plus people have registered interests, so I encourage you to take the next step and buy a ticket.

If you would like to contribute any memorabilia or stories, please do. This can be as simple as finding one or more of your team rugby photos’, taking an image, and sending it via private message directly to our COB Facebook page. From there, we just check if we don’t already have it, and if not, we just post and share.

Can I also acknowledge Mark Ferguson for keeping on top of the communications, promotions and the newsletter. A top job mate.

Damian Peeti- Chair, COB Centennial Subcommittee

Senior A - Coach 2019

The Board can announce that Hayden Triggs - has been reappointed as Head Coach to the Senior A Side for 2019.

Hayden began his prosperous career at the Turbos starting in 2002 and ending 2008. His 71 caps have made him an icon of Manawatu rugby with his gritty style of play and ever-recognisable moustache. He scored a mammoth 55 points as a Turbo which led to long stints at both the Highlanders and the Blues.

It is great to have Hayden back for another season in charge.

As Assistant Coach - we would like to welcome Save Seruvatu. Save has experience with the Fiji 7s, Wellington club rugby teams and had had an extensive playing career.

COLLEGE COLTS GO FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

In the first instance, the club can celebrate the success of our colt’s team going from strength to strength in 2018 and the prospect of our lads returning with that form in 2019.

Leading the recruitment drive is Damian Peeti, no stranger to motivating the lads, in starting early for next season, by just having conversation.

The Management team is set to continue with Head Coach Dougie Aull returning with those assisting him coaches Rhys Christian and Jake Connolly, which encourages a succession plan of future coaches of the club.

Damian said, "We are confident that the majority of the lads form the 2018 campaign will return, however, we also have to keep up the recruitment drive". The recruitment drive has been aided by the release of the School Leavers list provided by the Manawatu Rugby Union, which is a great resource. Like the MRU, College are just as committed to retaining players on the verge of leaving school, for the future of our province.

Like any team, the comradery amongst the Colts is great, the culture is what each individual brings, and with that creates a great Club atmosphere.

In terms of the Centennial Weekend, Damian finished by saying, "That one of the highlights in 2019 will be the Centennial games, and the Colts are hopeful, that we can play alongside our senior teams as well".

Our ORIGINAL Emblem

A little bit of HISTORY....

The early colours of Western United were red & black hooped jerseys from 1915 when the club was formed (not 1918).

In fact, the present club can be traced back to 1912 when the union had abolished all clubs (including Kia Toa) and introduced the District Scheme, Palmerston being divided into four districts (Northern, Eastern, Southern, Western) each to form its own club. Early in March 1912 Northern club was formed and adopted red & black as its colours. Two weeks later Southern club was formed and, strangely, also adopted Red & Black as its colours.

In April 1913 Northern and Southern clubs decided to merge and change the name to United and adopted red & black as their colours. United won the Hankins Shield in 1914.

In 1915, partly due to men serving overseas, Western club merged with United, to become Western United with red & black. During the war years 1916-17-18 when many clubs went into recess and the union did not arrange club competitions, Western United continued to function and played games against Pirates, PN High School and Feilding Technical.

In 1928 Western United changed its name to Athletic, but after two season the club merged with West End Old Boys club in 1930 to become PN United. West End OB had operated for four years but never fielded a senior team.
