This week's "Claim" of the Week, is, unfortunately, not a claim at all. It is more about lost opportunity.

Tuesday morning I got 2 calls from people who need Disability coverage but can't buy a Disability policy because it's too late for them.

The 1st has Muscular Dystrophy and the 2nd has uncontrolled Type II Diabetes. Their only hope is a guarantee issue workplace policy and neither has a job with benefits.

The 3rd is my friend below who had insurance but now doesn't.

A friend of mine, and former client, posted on Facebook that while participating in a charity event last week his foot got stuck between a rock and he tore his Achilles tendon.

A very painful injury with a very long healing process.

He needed surgery and cannot walk on it until the end of June. He is effectively "couch-ridden" until he gets his walking cast and even then still can't work.

I reached out to him and offered to help file his his claim.

He told me that he had "foolishly" let his policies lapse because he "didn't need them any longer" He also told me, "that if my wife wasn't working we would be up $%^W#'s creek...so much for a Summer vacation with the kids".

"The worse part", he said was, "we didn't cancel our policies because of the expense, we were just unrealistic about our risks".

Many of you reading this have Life Insurance (I hope!) but far few have Disability Insurance. Why? You are 7x more likely to be disabled then killed.

Disability Insurance would have paid him for his missed work and hopefully saved his vacation plans.

The Accident Insurance which paid for his wife and kids when they were injured in a car crash a few years back would have also paid $1000s of dollars in addition to the Disability Insurance (and Health Insurance) was $8/week for his family plan.
