Ice is Perfect for Ice Fishing Derby, Saturday March 26th!

Due to warm temperatures two weeks ago, the Game and Fish Association moved the shacks from in front of the lodge to Skunk Bay, where the ice is still thick enough to host the event and where it was held last year. Many people have driving to the Narrows and seen the open water under the bridge and have called in concern over the safety of the ice for the derby. But due to the change in location the ice is perfect for the fishing derby. At Skunk Bay there is no fast flowing current like under the bridge or near the lodge and therefore the water is over 3 feet thick in the bay. The temperatures have dropped considerably since last week making the surface water subside and the ice freeze like glass.

"The ice couldn't be better for the derby!" states commercial fisherman, Harry Davidson. "The ice is over 3 feet thick, the surface water is gone and I have been driving my truck out there all last week and again this week. It will be perfect for the derby!"

"It is important to remember that the water under the bridge has a strong current running through it that makes that area thin most years." says Blair Olafson, commercial fisherman who has spent all of his afternoons this winter on various sections of the lake surrounding the Narrows. "Skunk Bay is a sheltered bay with no current. Even during the plus temperature days we had last week, we fished at the bay. The auger was motor deep in all the holes we made making the ice anywhere from 3-4 feet deep, which is more than enough to ensure a safe derby location."

The forecast for Saturday is sunny and -2 degrees which will make it a great day to be out on the ice. With the below zero temperatures all this week (including the derby) there will be no surface water, which I know concerned a few people last year. And with less wind in the forecast this year, it should be an even better day for such a great community event. Last year was a blast and we are even more excited about the turn out for this year!
