Franka’s devotion to natural landscapes is apparent in her photographs. She often photographs alone. To her, being by herself in nature is a spiritual experience, where she goes to recharge, decompress, relax and reflect.
The need for finding Solitude is more important today than at any time for Bill. His photography is really a byproduct of his search for Solitude. The camera requires him to pay attention to what’s around him, looking for the beauty in composition. I

Where Will the Displaced Artists, Arts Organizations and Administrators All Go?
Posted: 06 Jul 2015 05:23 PM PDT
Good morning.
"And the beat goes on……………………."

The issue of artists being priced out of living and working in our cities is not new.

The concentration of wealth in a smaller percentage of the population, steamrolling gentrification, finite urban real estate options in many areas (including in limited premium locations), skyrocketing real estate prices, increased rents, and such things as AirBnB putting pressure on real estate to turn high, quick profits - have together have made it increasingly expensive for artists to live and work in cities across the country. The problem continues to grow. Those who think there is still a solution might prefer to cast it as a challenge, while those who think the die is cast - at least in some cities - might see it as an unsolvable problem). However you frame the situation, it continues to be worrisome.

Juan Felipe Herrera becomes first Mexican American U.S. Poet Laureate

As a child, Juan Felipe Herrera learned to love poetry by singing about the Mexican Revolution with his mother, a migrant farmworker in California. Inspired by her spirit, he has spent his life crossing borders, erasing boundaries and expanding the American chorus.

On Wednesday, Herrera becomes the first Hispanic American to serve as poet laureate of the United States.

“I’m looking forward to a whole new world — and a new me,” Herrera said from his home in Fresno, Calif. “The times now seem to be evolving with voices of color. All voices are important, and yet it seems that people of color have a lot to say, particularly if you look through the poetry of young people — a lot of questions and a lot of concerns about immigration and security issues, you name it, big questions. All this is swirling in the air.”

Federal Analysis: Arts, Culture Add More to Economy than Thought

WASHINGTON — Creative industries including Hollywood and broadcasting contribute more to the U.S. economy than previously thought, the government said Monday in its first official analysis of the arts and culture sector’s economic value.
The report from the National Endowment for the Arts and U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis shows arts and culture contributed more than $698 billion to the economy — about 4.32 percent of U.S. goods and services. The study of the creative sector’s contribution to U.S. gross domestic product is based on 2012 data, the most recent figures available, and includes nonprofit, for-profit and government-funded programs.
Six industries account for the bulk of arts and culture production, according to the analysis. They include broadcasting, movies and videos, publishing, retail sales, performing arts and advertising. Analysts found 4.7 million workers were employed in arts and culture production. To read the entire article click here.

$10k grant opportunity from Cal Humanities

This looks like an amazing opportunity for any organization that’s looking to produce a “community story” for public viewing (website, public exhibit, video, etc.). Community Stories (previously the California Story Fund) is a competitive grants program to support story-based public humanities projects that collect, preserve, interpret, and share the stories of California communities—past and present. Since 2003, we have awarded over $3 million to over 400 projects through this grant program that seeks to foster greater knowledge, understanding, and empathy among us.
The Community Stories program funds projects that focus on the collection and sharing of real stories of California’s communities. Projects must involve at least one humanities expert as an advisor, use the methods of analysis that inform the humanities as well as community-based research, and produce work that is publicly accessible. Application eligibility is limited to California-based nonprofit organizations or local/state public agencies or institutions. Grant awards range up to $10,000 and a cash or in-kind match is required. There are two yearly rounds of open applications for Community Stories. The next application deadline is August 3, 2015; Go to http://calhum.org/grants/community-stories-grant for more information.
