Inspired by Brian Guehring’s TYA Blog post, this webinar is a discussion around the age appropriate casting of young people, and the challenges, ethics, and possible best practices. The panelists will discuss their experiences in directing, acting alongside, and overseeing the young actor’s experiences in cultivating their professional and personal development.

1. Identify new strategies in casting young people in theatre productions.
2. Learn from the successes and challenges that other theatre artists and companies encounter when casting young people.
3. Engage in dialogue around casting young people with the perspective of administration, playwriting, and directing.

Wendy Bable Headshot

Wendy Bable is a director/deviser/playwright and a member of the resident artistic company at People’s Light with an MFA in Directing-Drama & Theatre for Youth from The University of Texas at Austin. Wendy was named a Winifred Ward Scholar by the American Alliance for Theater and Education in 2008, and in 2011 she was the U.S. representative to the ASSITEJ International Directing Seminar in Cologne, Germany. Her direction of The Transition of Doodle Pequeño was featured at the Kennedy Center in the 2012 New Visions/New Voices festival, and she recently directed Habia Una Vez for the Write Now new play festival, hosted by Indiana Repertory Theatre (IRT) in 2015. She is currently collaborating on a community-engaged performance entitled [SHIFT] with The National Theatre of Scotland, and is directing Aurand Harris’ Peter Rabbit and Me for IRT which opens November 21.

Brian Guehring is the Playwright in Residence and Education Director of the Omaha Theater Company, whose education department does drama and dance education outreach for every single child in over 71 local schools each school year (reaching over 27,000 students) . Brian’s most recent script Sherlock Holmes and the First Baker Street Irregular opens at the Omaha Theater Company on November 6th with a cast of 7 adults and 5 youth. Brian’s plays have been honored by New Visions/New Voices, Nebraska Arts Council, Playwights in Our Schools, and AATE’s Unpublished Play Project. Brian’s teen theater troupe Pride Players (which uses improvisation to explore being gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and straight allied teen issues) has been honored by several regional and national groups, including a 2006 Human and Civil Rights Award from the National Education Association. He earned his MFA in theater for young audiences from University of Texas at Austin. Brian is currently serving on the national board of directors of Theater for Young Audiences/USA and previously served as founding executive co-chair of Pride Youth Theater Alliance.

Meghann Henry is a theatre maker, teaching artist, and arts administrator. Currently she serves as the Director of Education for the Mizel Arts and Culture Center in Denver, CO. Previous to her move to Denver, she lived in Kansas City where she worked as the Director of Education and Outreach at the Coterie Theatre and worked as a Youth Services Librarian for the Kansas City Public Library. Nationally she serves as the Associate Editor of the TYA Today, a trade magazine focusing on current trends in theatre with and for youth, and is the co-chair for the applied theatre network of The American Alliance for Theatre and Education. She holds an MFA in Theatre for Young Audiences from the University of Central Florida where her research focused on devising theatre for 4-8 year olds.

Tamara Carroll is a third year MFA student in the Drama & Theatre for Youth & Communities program at UT Austin, where she focuses in TYA directing, new play development, and devising socially engaged theatre with teens. She "summers" in Connecticut, where she serves as Program Head of Theatre at Buck's Rock Creative and Performing Arts Camp, a Montessori style arts camp serving ages 11-17. Last year she served as Student Producer for UT Austin's biannual Cohen New Works festival, the largest collegiate festival of new work in the nation, and was recently recognized with the Don and Elizabeth Doyle Fellowship for her work with and for youth.
