On Tour After the Permaculture Convergence

Dear Friends,

Last weekend we did a fantastic private "Maker's Tour" of Uptown Oakland for someone's 70th birthday to celebrate with his fourteen friends. They asked us to showcase the next generation that is shaping the arts, food scene, and economy in Oakland so they would learn more about the positive future they were leaving their grandchildren. With our friend Hiroko Kurihara from Oakland Makers leading the day we showed them how Makers are banding together with their neighbors to preserve the city's creative heart and cultural soul. We were all moved and inspired by their curiosity and engaged discussions over lunch. Check out the photos on Facebook (and maybe like us while you are there :)

Speaking of Makers....we're launching our Holiday Maker's "Experience" December 7th in the SF Dogpatch more below.
.
I look forward to getting to see you in person next weekend at the Green Festival where I'll be speaking twice on Saturday! Or perhaps you'd like to join us on our Sustainability, Agriculture, and the Arts Tour to Cuba in February.

I hope BAGT can continue to share the abundant resources of this magical place we call the Bay Area and ask for your continued support in sharing our newsletter with your friends and perhaps you can organize your own group and join us on a tour soon!

With gratitude,
Marissa

PS I've run into local environmental luminaries recently that I deeply respect who have told me they actually read this newsletter and it made my heart sing! (Thank you Lynne Twist, Amigo Bob, Tim Mueller and Ken Brower I am humbled)

Kimberly Austin

We’ll begin our five-stop experience at the the historic off-the-grid Noonan Art Studios located on Pier 70 on the SF Bay. Having spent 13 years painting from her studio in the Noonan Building, Suzy Barnard has observed countless freighters, barges and tugboats on the bay that inspire her abstract images of the sea, ships, and sky. Next door we’ll visit Austin Press where Kimberly Austin’s magical studio wafts with the scent of soaps, perfumes and her stainless steel wax melter pours the most exquisite collection of handcrafted candles. Her vintage presses crank out a rich assortment of ephemera inspired by her collection of rare books and alphabets.

Then it’s your turn to be the artist/designer! Workshop Residence engages the worlds of craft, art and design. They collaborate with artists and designers from all over the world, manufacturing onsite and enlisting local fabricators and industrial manufacturing partners as needed to make functional objects for everyday living. They’ll guide you through a customized one-hour workshop where you can design a made to order gift for the holidays.

Strolling down the street, we may stop for artisan chocolates or coffee before visiting Rickshaw Bags where they make colorful urban messenger bags and backpacks in one of the few remaining sewing factories in SF. We'll meet the owner and tour the factory. If you like, you can even choose your own fabrics from their extensive selection for a customized bag of your own.

We’ll cap our experience at Magnolia Brewery for a sample beer tasting while we hang with the locals in this former tin can factory. The rough-and-tumble industrial vibe looks like it hasn't been touched since the '30s. You linger and have dinner right there at their Smokestack BBQ.

The Maker movement has gathered increasing momentum and makers have created their own market ecosystem, developing new products and services. Please help spread he word to support these visionaries in our backyard.
