The Lord is With You

God keeps the promise made to David, to give him an everlasting throne. The angel tells Mary that God will give David’s throne to her son Jesus. She is perplexed by Gabriel’s greeting and by the news of her coming pregnancy, but she is able still to say, “Count me in.” We who know that Jesus is called king only as he is executed still find it a mystery hard to fathom, but with Mary today we hear the news of what God is up to and say, “Count us in.”

Divine Light

On a long winter evening we gather to proclaim the coming of the light. Isaiah announces that the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. Paul reminds us that the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all. In the familiar account of Christ’s birth, the evening sky is bright with the heavenly host singing, “Glory to God in the highest.” Amid our broken world we proclaim that the prince of peace is born among us. God comes to us in human flesh—in Christ’s body and blood—so that we may be bearers of divine light to all the world.

The Word Dwells Among Us

On this Christmas morning the people of God gather to celebrate the birth of the Word made flesh, Christ our Lord. Luke recounts the familiar story of shepherds and angels; John’s gospel tells of the Word that dwells among us, full of grace and truth. The meaning of Christmas is made clear: the light shines in the darkness. It is in the liturgy that we encounter the Word made flesh—in the people of God gathered together as the body of Christ, and in the meal around the holy table. We go forth to be bearers of light as we proclaim this good news to all the ends of the earth.

Tonight! Advent Awakenings

AFG G38

Thursday December 21; 7:00-8:00 pm

Pastor Stephen will be leading three mid-week Advent experiences on the Thursday evenings of Advent, in the sanctuary. Our text will be Luke 1:46-56, the Magnificat, or Mary's Song of Praise. We will use that scripture to "awaken" ourselves to issues of white supremacy, patriarchy and capitalism. All are welcome for worship and discussion during our season of awakening.

Cristo Rey Scholarship Program

El salvadore

Lake Edge has had a relationship with Cristo Rey in Santa Ana, El Salvador for 25 years. Several years ago we asked Pr. Carlos how we could help them. He said the best thing we could do was to provide an education for the children. Education is not mandatory and requires the student to wear a uniform and have their own school supplies. The cost to send a child to school is about $100.00, a month’s income for a family. Every fall Lake Edge members provide scholarship funds, which are wired to Cristo Rey in January before the start of their school year. We have been able to support around 150 children each year. Some of the children have actually been able to pursue educational opportunities after high school. If you wish to participate in this program, please identify your donation as Cristo Rey Scholarship. There are cards in the fellowship area if you wish to donate in someone’s name as an alternative holiday gift.

Matching Gifts Update

gift hands

During August and September, we drew attention to two needs for fund raising through the gifts committee:

1) The congregation approved funding a youth pastor part time for the next year for $14,400. Parents and kids both spoke up in support of retaining Pastor Christa Fisher to continue in this position. Gifts given so far total $1,755, which the gifts committee has matched. Please support this position with donations made to the gifts committee for “youth pastor” and we’ll match your gift up to a total of $3,600. The gifts committee has already spent another $3,600 for this position for January through March 2017 and is in need of your support.

2) The congregation approved funding through the gifts committee of the repair of the front rock wall and fixing the drainage issue near the front door to prevent rain water from reaching our elevator shaft and basement hallway. The total for this project is $12,650. To date, we’ve raised $25. Please donate to this project through the gifts committee and mark your donation for “rock wall repair."

As always, thank you for your support of these types of special initiatives through the gifts committee. Jim St. Vincent, Chairperson, Gifts Committee
