GHF Represented on The G Word Film Advisory Board

The G Word Film is a documentary directed and produced by award-winning filmmaker Marc Smolowitz and produced by Ron Turiello. The G Word explores the lives of gifted individuals in America, giving us a better understanding of the gifted experience.

According to The G Word, the film tells its story through, “A mosaic of revealing stories told by children, adults, and elders will explore giftedness, intelligence, and neurodivergent learners across the age spectrum and ask, 'In the 21st century, who gets to be gifted and why?' Searching for an answer, THE G WORD takes an unexpected path, visiting rural, urban and suburban schools, homes of gifted families, low-income neighborhoods, brain scientists, educators, and policy experts to discover that gifted people reside in all walks of life - including our prisons – but many go unrecognized and don’t receive the support they need to fully thrive, sometimes with disastrous consequences.”

Supporting the film’s direction, The G Word Advisory Board consists of recognized experts and leaders within the gifted community, and GHF is proud to have three of its own on the board:

▪  GHF President, Barry Gelston
▪  GHF Editorial Director and GHF Press author, Celi Trépanier
▪  GHF Press author, Paula Prober.

The GHF Journey's Editorial Debut

My heart is full of excitement, inspiration, and hope, and my brain has been flashing an overload warning for a while now, but The GHF Journey inaugural debut is here! I am genuinely thrilled to send you GHF Learners' very first issue of our redesigned and more personalized newsletter, and my sincere wish is that it will become a responsive, supportive go-to resource to help you with navigation for your gifted road.

As GHF’s Director of our Editorial Committee, you, our readers, have been my highest priority as I created this newsletter and considered the content within. “What did I need most when I was seemingly lost and alone on this journey of raising gifted children as well as understanding the giftedness within myself?” was my constant, recurring thought.

As GHF Learners strives to create a joyful, supportive and resourceful community for you, The GHF Journey will be an integral part of that goal. The GHF Journey is your newsletter brimming with information and resources to help you navigate your journey. With that, I hope you will reach out to me through my email and let me know how we can better support you on your journey.

Safe and joyful travels!

Finding The "Right-Fit" For Your Gifted/2e Child

by Sharon Duncan

Being a tall man in the United States has its advantages. Studies show that tall men tend to climb the corporate ladder faster, make more money, and even get waited on in restaurants quicker. At 6’5”, my husband is well outside the norm for male height. What those studies don’t report is being tall means you have to buy the expensive airline seats, it prevents you from being able to fit into fast little sports cars, and if you think doorways are standard, you don’t know how many of them are not until you have scalped yourself a time or two. Through no fault of his own (or anyone else’s for that matter) being outside the norm causes my husband to both experience and navigate the world differently. In the same manner, gifted/2e children, through no fault of their own, because they are outside the norm, experience the world differently and often require special navigation through school. Sadly, in an educational system defined by standards, finding the “right-fit” school can prove challenging for parents of outliers. (Read more...)

Barry Gelston, President of GHF

As President of the GHF Board, my job is to be the public face of the organization, lead strategic planning, lead and provide support for the board of directors, and supervise staff leadership. Strategic planning is fun for me as I am a big picture integrator. I love to see how parts work together. I see GHF as a community of families, professionals, educators, researchers, writers, volunteers, and staff whose purpose is to come together and support gifted learning at all phases of life.

Initial Goal is the Development of a High-Quality Organization

In working with the board of directors, I see my job as empowering each director to be creative, feel strong ownership over their domains, work collaboratively with each other, and to then lead the community in the same way; working with each other with an attitude of Love and Kindness as our goal.

The organization has many functional capabilities that are meant to be integrated and work together:

▪ Editorial - the creation of content to educate and support gifted learning, such as online articles and content, books, monthly newsletters, and a quarterly journal.
▪ Education - having an online educational facility that is a hub for providing the content, community, and educational context for all of GHF.
▪ Family Membership - the ongoing development of a mutually supportive community that draws on peer-to-peer support and engagement with GHF Professionals.
▪ Professional Membership - the development of a mutually supportive community that draws on peer-to-peer support and engagement with GHF families.
▪ Development - the ongoing process of finding corporate donors and grants that will fund new projects, operations, and broadening our community.
▪ Organizational Shared Services - the creation of these services is GHF’s operations department that will be led by an Executive Director who will be responsible for all operations for GHF.

I feel very good that we have the team, community, and resources to build something more complete and special than before. Please reach out to me by email, I would love to hear from you.

Altogether, I see GHF as a self-supporting community where we are all engaged within our roles to support gifted learning at all phases of life. We are building the attitude, resources, and infrastructure for GHF to thrive as a joyful learning community for years to come.

Finding the Right Fit: 2e kids in a “one-size-fits-all” world

by Heather Pleier at Wonderschooling

Imagine with me, for a second, that you’re going shoe shopping. You want to find a good, affordable pair of shoes that fit and look nice too.

If you’re average – say a US Women’s Size 7 or 8, you can walk into almost any shoe store and expect to find something that could work.
In fact, you may find multiple pairs, may have dozens or more at home to choose from.

Now imagine that your feet aren’t an “average” size. Let’s say that you wear a size 12 Women’s shoe. And not only that, but your feet are extra narrow as well.

Clearly, you didn’t choose your shoe size. There was nothing you did to influence either the length or width of your feet, and there’s really nothing you can do to change it. (Read more...)

Paula Prober is a psychotherapist and consultant in private practice based in Eugene, Oregon. Over the 35+ years she has worked with the gifted, Paula has been a TAG teacher and teacher trainer and has presented at universities, conferences, and webinars. She consults internationally with gifted adults and parents of gifted children. Her popular book, Your Rainforest Mind: A Guide to the Well-Being of Gifted Adults and Youth was published by GHF Press. She blogs at Your Rainforest Mind. Her writing has appeared in the Psychotherapy Networker, Advanced Development Journal and online at Thrive Global, Introvert Dear, Highly Sensitive Refuge, and Rebelle Society.

My book cover is getting an upgrade. The content will be the same but my book will now have a fabulous cover, too. (designed by Claire Flint Last of Luminare Press here in Eugene, Oregon) When it’s available for purchase, I’ll announce it on Facebook and Twitter. And here.
If you haven’t decided if you want to read it, here’s one person’s insightful opinion:
“Why read Your Rainforest Mind?
– Because the countless examples of what it’s like to be an RFM will make you laugh and cry and feel validated for the amazing being that you are
– Because the book is filled with practical strategies to help with the everyday challenges RFMs face
– Because of the dozens of links to books, articles and websites for further research
– Because after reading it you’ll be a hundred steps closer to knowing your place in this world
– If you’re bringing up a young RFM, you’ll worry less and enjoy your child more...read more

We know that GHF has a thriving global community, and we want your help to showcase where gifted learners live. This Spring, we are mapping our community through the Lights On In Our Homeschool initiative. We are working on creating new local groups, resources for more isolated homeschoolers, and a microschool directory.
