Join Kidical Mass NYC for their October Ride! We'll explore the Queens Waterfront on this intermediate-level ride. We'll have stickers, buttons, and snacks!

A flat, 5-mile ride for intermediate riders that are comfortable riding on streets with an adult. The ride will travel along the portions of the Gantry State Park, and the Queens Waterfront, as well as meander inland to Brooklyn Grange and then end at Socrates Sculpture Park's Harvest Festival.

Please bring water and snacks, although we'll have something for the kids at the end. Helmets are required for kids 13 and under by law, recommended for everyone else.

Intermediate riders are kids ages 7 and up with good street riding skills. Kids can ride on sidewalks and we will be on the green way for a stretch, there will be parts where we will be on streets, so please take that into consideration when determining whether or not to let your child ride on his or her own power. Children in baby seats and on cargo bikes are always welcome on Kidical Mass NYC rides.

Learn how to keep trees happy and healthy with the NYC Compost Project hosted by Build It Green!NYC! Help prepare local tree beds along the Vernon Boulevard bike lane in Long Island City for the fall and winter. We’ll be weeding, cultivating the soil, planting daffodil bulbs and amending tree beds with locally made compost and mulch to help them thrive in our urban environment. We'll provide gloves, tools, snacks and tree care know-how! All ages welcome at tree care events. Youth under 18 must be accompanied by an adult to sign safety waiver.

Please wear clothes suitable for light gardening work and closed-toed shoes.

Alongside the Park's workshops, yoga classes, sculpture exhibitions and stunning views, the GrowNYC Greenmarket at Socrates Sculpture Park is a great place to spend a Saturday morning. Shoppers will find a bountiful selection of seasonal produce from the Black Dirt region of Orange County, Mexican specialty produce from Richmond County, orchard fruit and juice, meat, poultry and eggs and multi-ethnic artisan breads.

Free cooking demonstrations are held weekly featuring seasonal items from the market, and family friendly activities take place throughout the season.

NYC Compost Project Hosted by Build it Green! NYC, is a community-scale composting network, that works to increase capacity for, acceptance of, and participation in composting in western Queens. We serve the public by hosting weekly and event-specific food scrap drop-offs, training community members in urban composting best practices, and providing high-quality compost to amend our city’s soils. The finished compost is used in community gardens, on street trees, and in public beautification projects.

Instead of adding your food scraps to the landfill, you can drop them off at one of NYC Compost Project Hosted by BIG! drop off locations:

On Saturday, July 26th, we biked the Creek with two dozen of our newest friends and event partners Recycle A Bicycle, Willis Elkins from Newtown Creek Alliance and Rich Melinick from the Greater Astoria Historical Society.

Willis and Rich led the two hour tour through the Creek-side neighborhoods of Hunters Point, Dutch Kills, Blissville and Greenpoint.

The community turned out in large numbers for the First Annual City of Water Day at Gantry Plaza State Park on Saturday, July 12th to enjoy paddling off of newly accessible Pier 4, play games on the plaza, read and borrow books at the pop-up library and care for the gardens of Gantry Park.

MANY thanks to our volunteers and event partners:
New York State Parks, Hunters Point Parks Conservancy, Queens Library, Friends of Queens Library at Hunters Point and the LIC Community Boathouse.

We received a grant for $500 for our participation at the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance’s City of Water Day presented by the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company. This grant was provided by the New York-New Jersey Harbor Estuary Program and the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance.

The Queensbridge Park Waterfront is Officially Open!

This afternoon, the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation led a press conference/ribbon cutting to open the the Queensbridge Waterfront and Esplanade after 14 months of construction and over a decade of inaccessibility.

The Friends of Queensbridge Park and Green Shores NYC are grateful to Council Member Van Bramer, Congresswoman Maloney, State Senator Gianaris, Assemblywoman Nolan, NYC Parks Commissioner Silver, Queensborough Commissioner Lewandowski and others for listening to the community and making this day possible.

Green Shores NYC is recognized by MWA as a 2014 Hero of the Harbor!

On Thursday, April 24th, Green Shores NYC was awarded the Hero of the Harbor award at the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance's 2014 Waterfront Conference.

It was an honor for us to be recognized for our Waterfront Vision Plan for Astoria & Long Island City, Queens.

The Vision Plan was the culmination of almost two years of work with the community members of Astoria & Long Island City, Queens with input from our member organizations, local electeds, City agencies and through support and partnership with the Trust for Public Land.

Also recognized with the award were other waterfront advocates: Harlem River Working Group, Fund for a Better Waterfront, Rockaway Waterfront Alliance and Ironbound Community Corporation.

Special thanks to our member organizations and our volunteers that worked tirelessly to bring the Vision Plan to life.

We dedicate our award to the residents of Astoria & Long Island City!

The Waterfront Vision Plan was created for the community and by the community with Green Shores NYC & The Trust for Public Land.

In the summer and fall of 2010, hundreds of Western Queens residents came together to participate in seven neighborhood listening sessions, two area-wide brainstorming sessions and a waterfront bus tour generating more than a thousand comments, ideas and solutions for creating a more connected, useful and beautiful waterfront.
