Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 5-11)

Computer Science education week is an annual CALL to action to inspire K-12 students to LEARN computer science, ADVOCATE for Equity, and celebrate the contributions of students, teachers and partners to the field.

As a class, consider spending some time learning about computer science next week. It could be as simple as utilizing some of the coding resources from REMC1 like the Code and Go Mouse (check out here), exploring a cybersecurity concept on cyber.org, participating in the Hour of Code or discussing current events and careers related to the computer science field. Regardless of what your class is planning to learn about next week, there is most likely a computer science connection that can be explored! Learn more about computer science education week at https://www.csedweek.org/

 BETR-CT Project Poster 1

Computational Thinking is a set of problem solving strategies that help students acquire critical thinking skills that they can use across their curriculum. In recognition of Computational Thinking (CT) as a new literacy for all students, the Michigan Department of Education is partnering with Project Tomorrow, a national education nonprofit organization, to implement a pilot program in 2022-23 in selected communities to help teachers learn how to integrate CT within their everyday lessons and classroom activities. The Regional Education Media Center #1 and the Western UP MiSTEM Network have been selected to participate in this new pilot program, the Computational Thinking Integration Project (CTIP) and will form a Western UP cohort. As part of this pilot, the Western UP cohort will receive training and support from Project Tomorrow to develop a cadre of Computational Thinking Integrationists who will coach and mentor teachers across the region on CT skills and practices. If interested in learning more about this project, please contact Steve Kass (steve@remc1.org) or Emily Gochis (egochis@copperisd.org).

The MACUL Conference, Michigan's premier educational technology event, will be held March 15-17 at the Huntington Place (formerly known as the Cobo Center) in Detroit, MI. Over 4,000 educators attend this conference annually!

REMC1 recognizes the value of this conference and would like to assist our local schools by organizing travel accommodations via a charter bus. Please reserve a seat on the bus by completing our MACUL 2023 Bus form. The estimated cost for the bus ride is anticipated to be $100 or less per person but will be based on the total number of riders.

If you plan on attending MACUL, we strongly recommend reservering your hotel accommodations as soon as possible as the hotels near the conference center fill up quickly. Reservations should be made through MACUL’s hotel reservation system which can be viewed at MACUL Grand Connection.

Additional information, including conference registration, can be viewed at https://maculconference.org and questions can be directed to Steve Kass at steve@remc1.org.
