National Agriculture Week is March 16-20 this year. Every year, producers, agribusinesses, government agencies and others across America join together to recognize the contributions of agriculture. Siouxland Agriculture in the Classroom is hosting a series of activities available to come to your school. We have enlisted the help of FFA chapters in the area to visit as many classrooms as we can during National Ag Week.

If you would like an FFA group to visit your classroom during National Ag Week, please contact Melissa at melissa.keyes@ifbf.org.

Farm Chat Brings Farm to School

Farm Chat-Turkey3

Because field trips are costly and create liability, many schools don’t offer such opportunities. Farm Chat is a way to bring the field trip to the classroom through the use of Skype and Google Hangouts.

Farm Chat can be tailored for any age group, unit of study, or classroom interest. Are you learning about soil types? Let’s talk to a farmer and see how they use and take care of the soil. Talking about math? A farmer uses math every single day, one example is building a feed ration for livestock (what do they eat and how much of each ingredient is used). Just want to see what it’s like on a dairy or hog or grain or cattle farm? The options are endless.

If you’d like to bring Farm Chat to your classroom, please contact Melissa Keyes at 402/669-5126 or by email, melissa.keyes@ifbf.org.

Adopt-a-Farmer Program

Would your class be interested in adopting a farmer for special pen pal program? We have farmers who would be willing to send letters, photos and videos to your classroom at designated times during the school year. Your students will have the chance to learn what's going on at the farm and where their food comes from!

For more information, visit our website. Contact Melissa today if your class would like a farmer.

Who We Are

The Siouxland Agriculture in the Classroom program provides valuable resources for teachers and students in Woodbury, Plymouth, Sioux, Ida and Cherokee counties. The goal of the program is to encourage educators to teach students about Iowa agriculture while meeting math, science, social studies and language arts benchmarks. Through creative lessons, field trips and hands-on projects, students can learn about agriculture's role in Iowa's history, where our food comes from, and how technology continues to impact agriculture in our state.
