WINTER WEATHER PREPARATION

During periods of heavy snow and ice, buses, like personal vehicles, will sometimes fall behind schedule, but rest assured operators will be working to reach your stop as soon as possible.

Here are a couple of tips to make transit travel easier in winter weather:

• Plan extra time for your commute.
• Take an earlier trip. Buses not only get slowed down by the snow, but also by surrounding traffic. Allowing for extra time is the best way to get around during winter weather travel.
• Stay informed. RIPTA posts updates about detours and delays in adverse weather conditions. Passengers are strongly advised to monitor news reports, check www.RIPTA.com and RIPTA’s social media outlets (Facebook @RideRIPTA, Twitter @RIPTA_RI) for service advisory updates. You can also sign up for route-specific emails at www.ripta.com/detours-news. Sign up for the routes you ride, or get all general news.
• Use extra caution at bus stops and on sidewalks due to decreased visibility and slippery conditions.
• Remember, that if you don’t like driving in slippery conditions, this is a great time to let us do the work!

FEDERAL GRANT PAVES THE WAY FOR NEW BUS HUBS AT URI, CCRI

In case you missed it: We were so excited last month when U.S. Senator Jack Reed announced that we will receive $8 million to build new mobility hubs at the University of Rhode Island (URI) in South Kingstown and the Community College of Rhode Island’s (CCRI) Knight Campus in Warwick.

The federal grant, which includes funding for additional buses, will enable RIPTA to better serve the two higher education campuses while improving overall bus service to the southern portion of the state. Currently, URI and CCRI serve nearly 35,000 students a year and generate nearly 1 million RIPTA trips. The new bus hubs and fleet acquisitions will help meet the growing need for more transit service at CCRI and URI and in the surrounding communities.

RIPTA IN THE COMMUNITY

THANK YOU FOR BRIGHTENING A CHILD’S HOLIDAY

RIPTA collaborated with Providence College Friars and the University of Rhode Island (URI) Rams to give back to those in need this holiday season. Providence College collected hundreds of teddy bears at an ice hockey game to donate to the West End Community Center.

URI collected nearly 400 toys for Lights & Sirens International at a recent basketball game.

These toys and teddy bears collected will help put smiles on the faces of underprivileged children in our community.
