Fast & Furious Tennis
Viewing is free for the USTA (M/W) Adult League State Championships, August 8-10, hosted here for the first time.
Expect fireworks!
Leagues battle for the right to compete in the Midwest Championships, then the Nationals. In 2011, the MCTC Senior Women’s 3.5 Team placed 3d in the U.S. |
Steve’s Sly Tip
Swing through the ball, right?
“As you hit the ball, imagine three more balls coming and swing through them as well.
“Voila! Now you’re hitting through a parade of balls for stroke path extension and great results.” Steve Host is Director of Junior Competitive Tennis. |
Clay Your Way
You know the clay returns ball after ball to your racquet so you can keep swinging away, constructing “verrry” interesting points.
But did you know playing the grainy Har-Tru definitely improves your hard court game?
Guaranteed! |

He Said. She Said
He: “I always carry a rain racquet in my bag.”
She: “Really?!”
He: “If it’s raining I have the right racquet.”
She: “Tennis isn’t played in the rain, Bubba.”
He: “My name is Bob.”
She: “You bought a rain racquet, your name is Bubba.” |
Long Shot
In tennis as in life, if they tell you it’s a long shot, it’s usually out! |
Fiery Backhand Fix
If your backhand is locked and loaded, you may fire when ready. For righties, the key is your left wrist snap because the right hand just goes along for the ride.
Get a pro tip on this one. Talk to a pro. |
Doubles Racquet Clatter
When both players aggressively cut each other off to smack a volley winner, racquets often clash. That’s the sound of a good team— both fighting for the shot. |
In Tennis…
Resist normal impulses to change. The grip feels funny. The right grip always feels funny for awhile. |
Doubles Scoring
Designate the score keeper. If all four players decide to keep score, there’ll be moments when nobody is keeping score. Then the fireworks start. |
Be A Prisoner Of Tennis
Balance your life with moderation as long as you play tennis every day. |
Hail Spring League Winners
You know most of them---winners and finalists of Spring League Tennis from Cary Dardas, Director of Leagues. Click For Champions! |
Really!
Playing tennis is hard work and there are no short cuts to the top, said Swedish net minder legend Stefan Edberg.
Unless your name is Johnny McEnroe.
John hated practice, so he didn’t. John hated training, so he didn’t. John was affronted by tennis specific conditioning.
John simply played both singles & doubles in more tournaments to stay ready. But the power game played by bigger, stronger, faster athletes with galactic equipment over-took him. |
Woody’s Way
If you’re playing against a bad backhand or flying forehand, hit everything to that stroke.
Everything?
“Don’t get cute! Everything! |
Canterbury Tennis Tale # 1
(The Illusionist)
He wore a business suit over his tennis clothes when he left the house. He played all day, stopping for a triple burger, shake and fries, to arrive home for the wife’s diet of sprouts, and fish from the Sea of Gulp.
“He just can’t lose weight,” she said. “But he seems so happy.” |
Best Ever Serving Advice
No matter the state of your serve, aim it at the returner 75% of the time. Be prepared for errors or weak returns you can clock with your best shot.
We can find no rationale for why this tactic isn’t used more, except perhaps the fruitless pursuit of aces. |
Service Return Is A Weapon
Stop thinking of the service return as some sort of special stroke.
Don’t bunt or chip it back, trying to just get it into play. Think of it as a big shot opportunity and clock it.
This doesn't work if you’re playing a 4.0-plus member firing rockets at you. Just duck! |
It's The "Reps"
Ambidextrous is simply a matter of repetitions, right? So why not two one-hand forehands or a brace of two-fisted backhands or righty/lefty service?
Innovation in tennis is scary. Innovation in tennis with big risk is scarier. Big change in tennis is found at the club and parks level, rarely on the Pro Tours. |
