October's Organizing Tip

Looking at Modern Design Trends

I am so incredibly inspired following a presentation by Suzanne Saul of Attica Furnishings on modern design trends, at the annual Nova Scotia Interior Decorators Professional Development Day, that I just have to share them with you. Some of these trends will have staying power and others not so much. The trick is to figure out how to incorporate them into your home décor if you find, like me, that you are obsessed with one or more of them.

Warm Metals – golds have been in style for a while now and show no signs of going away any time soon. I recently chose some fabulous brushed gold pulls for a clients’ new closet. So beautiful.

Geometrics – Suzanne says the 70’s are back. Yikes! Remember a little goes a long way. I’m kind of obsessed with the Corridor media cabinet by BDI. So functional and interesting.

Laser Cut – technology has allowed furniture and lighting to be rendered in new ways. Vermont Modern has some pretty snazzy lighting created using laser cut technology.

Blush Pink – Suzanne told us she first saw this colour in October of 2016 and now it’s everywhere at the buying shows. I am totally obsessed with a blush pink velvet sofa with a gold metal base that she showed us. Very feminine so not for everyone.

Modern Organic – I’m sure many of you have seen live edge wood pieces. Combined with greys, soft taupe and cream these pieces can create a comfortable and restful space.

Feather Filled – feather and down fill has always been available but more and more people are asking for feather fill because it is environmentally friendly. You’ll often see it paired with linen fabrics. Check out EQ3.

Mixed Materials – this can be a challenging look to pull off. You might combine wood with gold metal, with dark metal in a modern piece, and then mix it with a few antique pieces in a room. A great way to re-use some of those pieces you may have inherited.

Marble – marble accents are everywhere. You will see marble wood grain, ceramic marble, quartz that looks like marble and more.

Blues – especially popular in accents like chairs, rugs and pillows. I was just reading that your house will sell for more money if you paint your bathrooms blue.

Mid Century – yes, it’s still selling well. Thank goodness. Many of my readers know how I love Mid Century Modern (MCM). Check out Copeland furniture for some beautiful interpretations of this trend.

Texture – velvets, fur, tassles. I have noticed several designer friends creating custom velvet furniture pieces for their clients. If you upholster with velvet be sure to choose a more performance oriented velvet and know that it will still leave a mark where someone has been sitting so don’t choose it if that bugs you.

Tropical Prints – need I say more?

Greens – especially emerald green. I just can’t bring myself to use this colour but you might love it. Interesting how we saw this colour in fashion a few years ago.

Vintage with Modern – mixing middle eastern with mid century.

Swivel Chairs – these are very popular and work well with open concept living.

Artisan – Suzanne says many people are embracing having something handmade in their environment.

Wow, that’s sixteen trends we need to be aware of! Not all of them will appeal to you. You will want to take the best from the trends you like and very carefully pull them together to make them work for you. And don’t forget less is truly more.

Here is what one of Jane's clients had to say:

"Just wanted to let you know that we put the living room together on Sunday and it looks absolutely AMAZING! The walls, rug and furniture looks terrific. We are so happy. Can’t believe it is the same room- you are brilliant. It is amazing how you were able to pull everything together - thanks so much."
