Namaste GVI Family!

Nepal has been hit hard by a massive earthquake measuring a magnitude of 7.9. The devastation throughout the country is horrific but we are very thankful all our volunteers, staff and all of our projects are safe and well. We are working hard to deliver aid where it is most needed and appreciate the amazing support we have received so far! But we still need your help! We have a massive job ahead of us and many people to help!

The Situation in Nepal

The country has only just stopped experiencing aftershocks and the death toll is currently in the thousands and it is expected to continue rising. Thousands of people are injured and in need of medical attention but Nepal is massively unprepared for a disaster of this magnitude. The government is battling to respond and coordinate an effective relief effort.

Thousands of people have been left without homes as a result and are in desperate need of temporary accommodation. Nepal is currently experiencing storms and a lot of rain as we head into the wet season. Without proper shelter the weather is drastically effecting the thousands of displaced people. Basic supplies such as temporary shelter, drinking water, food and medical necessities are crucial to survival as well as ensuring hygiene and sanitation to limit the spread of disease.

Nepal is going to need a lot of long term support in its recovery from this tragic event and with our staff on the ground and solid local connections we are in a strong position to support Nepal in the long run.

Providing Relief

How are we planning to help?
The GVI Nepal Team is joining forces with local partner Himalayan Encounters and local Entrepreneurs to deliver much needed resources and supplies to the currently unreached people in some of the most damaged villages. We aim to by-pass the already overwhelmed and struggling government in a bid to provide efficient support to the people who need it the most.

What are we providing:

Initially resources are what is needed most!
We are currently putting together care packs to be delivered to the rural villages which have been hit the hardest. These packs will include first aid kits, water purification tablets, clothes, blankets, sanitary pads, toothbrushes, soap, flash lights and information leaflets about health and avoiding disease. We also plan to send rice, dal, tarpaulin, buckets and lots of other necessary resources in bulk as requested by the villages.

Rebuilding damaged homes and businesses in Pame is the next priority. Quite a few homes have suffered damage in Pame and the community requires help with its efforts to rebuild. We are also planning to deliver workshops on managing health and wellbeing in a crisis, preparation for a earthquake and improving structural integrity to minimise damage.

Currently we are providing emotional support to all of our projects. People are all very shaken and emotional in their efforts to come to terms with recent events.
