Watershed Relief Map Presentation with NYC H2O
1 p.m.
Queens Museum
Flushing Meadows Corona Park
Queens, NY 11368
New York City hosted the 1939 World's Fair in Flushing, Queens. To show off the city's water system that tapped mountain springs as far as 100 miles away, the Cartographic Survey Force, a branch of the Works Progress Administration, constructed a 3-dimensional model of the system out of wood and plaster for @ $100,000 (about $1.5 million in today's dollars).
Measuring 32 feet by 20 feet it never made it to the Fair and instead was put into storage; some said it because it was too big, but others have said it was to protect the City's Water system from spies as the country was beginning to contemplate war. It was shown once in 1948 - at the city's Golden Anniversary Exposition - and then forgotten. In 1991, a DEP architect discovered that the map was stored in the Jerome Avenue Pumping Station (built 1906) when he started to renovate that landmark building. The map -- in rough shape after 40 years of neglect -- was restored to its former glory in 2006.
You can now see the map for yourself and hear about its story from NYC H2O Director Matt Malina. A question and answer session will follow with Bryan Diffley and Peter DiSpensa, two civil engineers who worked on the water system.
This event is free [suggested $5 entrance fee to the museum].

Chance Ecologies Exhibit
December 17, 2015 through January 21, 2016
Radiator Gallery
10-61 Jackson Avenue
Hunters Point, Queens
For the past seven months, Chance Ecologies has brought together a group of artists to explore the wilderness of Hunter's Point South, Queens.
The post industrial site stood in disuse for 35 years, allowing for a complex, contemporary ecology to develop.
Over the course of the summer 2015, Chance Ecologies organized a series of art events, workshops and happenings that invited the public to experience the site prior to being completely leveled in October 2015, as part of the Hunters Point South housing development project.
Please join Chance Ecologies to view a diverse collection of new pieces by 17 different artists, which will include video, photo, sound and sculpture installations, zines, books, walks, talks and more, looking at this unique part of New York City's waterfront.
Curated by: Catherine Grau, Nathan Kensinger, Stephen Zacks

Emerging Artist Fellowship Exhibition
Daily through March 13, 2016
Socrates Sculpture Park
Vernon Blvd & Broadway
Ravenswood, Queens
Fifteen years ago Socrates Sculpture Park inaugurated the Emerging Artist Fellowship (EAF) Exhibition and launched what would become an annual exhibition of “artists to watch.”
This year’s Emerging Artist Fellows were selected through a highly competitive process that attracted over 350 applications, a record number for the program.
The 2015 Emerging Artist Fellows are: Kenseth Armstead, Charlotte Becket & Roger Sayre, José Carlos Casado, Torkwase Dyson, Carla Edwards, Davey Hawkins, Lena Henke, David Horvitz, Charlotte Hyzy, Melanie McLain, Kirsten Nelson, Freya Powell, Leah Raintree, Aaron Suggs, and Noa Younse.
As the culmination of a sought-after fellowship program, the EAF Exhibition is distinct in its commitment to emphasize individual artist projects. Rather than present an overarching theme, the exhibition highlights the singularity of each artist’s vision and subject matter, while providing critical consideration on diverse subjects, processes, and the specificities of site.
