POETRY IN MOTION

You watch the ads rotate on the digital boards inside RIPTA buses and suddenly you see the words of Walt Whitman, and you wonder, “Was that poem meant for me?”

Yes.

RIPTA is now participating in “Poetry in Motion,” a project that started 25 years ago as a collaboration between the Poetry Society of America and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in New York City. It involves posting poems, or pieces of poems, inside or outside buses, subways or commuter trains. The goal is not only to introduce people to poems they may otherwise never “meet,” but also to offer a moment of respite or reflection in the midst of our busy days.

The idea of bringing the project to Rhode Island was broached by RI State Poet Laureate Tina Cane who is passionate about making poetry accessible to all. “Poetry is good for the spirit and the citizen alike,” Cane said recently. “Our public transit system seems to me a most perfect and egalitarian vehicle to disseminate poetry throughout our state.”

The project went “live” in Rhode Island on September 12, 2017, with words from Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself” going up on the RIPTA bus boards. Cane will work with RIPTA to change the poetry about once a month and said that she will soon focus on Rhode Island poets. Since its inception, “Poetry in Motion” has been incorporated by numerous transit systems across the country. It was been warmly received by the public – touching some people and inspiring others.

We hope you enjoy it.

RIPTA To Host Follow-Up Public Session on State Human Services Transportation Coordinated Plan

As a follow up to the round of community meetings held in July on the State’s Coordinated Public Transit/Human Services Transportation Plan, RIPTA will be holding an informal public meeting on October 3, 2017, from 4 to 6 pm, at the RIPTA administration building at 705 Elmwood Avenue in Providence.

We will provide an update on how the plan is coming together and solicit more feedback.

The Coordinated Plan is intended to identify the transportation needs of senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and low-income individuals. It also creates an updated inventory of available transportation services for these populations – including transportation services provided by social service agencies and municipalities. The plan will identify gaps in services and prioritize options for addressing service needs.

Federal regulations require that the plan be updated every five years and RIPTA is working on an update of the 2013 version of the plan. It can be viewed on RIPTA’s website at http://bit.ly/2syCKML.

We hope you can join us.
