Shamrock Marathon 2014

Jen Rapaport -- 1st Whale at Shamrock 8k/marathon

"I went to Shamrock with a group of Somerville Road Runners, 10 total, and we had a blast. I had no intentions to run the marathon that fast but it was so windy I got into the 3:15 pace group of about 30 men and they acted as a wind block, peloton style. I kept with then until mile 22 when I saw a ponytail up ahead and told the group I was going to chase some ponytails. I passed 4-5 women in the last 4 miles. I dropped pace down to 7:00 or 6:55 for the last 4 miles and felt great. Was a really great race. HUGE beer tent after on the beach. Every runner got stew and 4 free Yuengling beers. Celtic bands played all day. A great day. Only better if it was warmer."

DSC 0660

1st Whale? Anyone who ran the 8k on Saturday, March 15, and the marathon the next day was officially in the Whale Challenge. Competing against 189 other Whales over 2 days, Jen was 1st Whale in each race, and crowned (or sprayed) the Winning Whale. She was 21st female and 3rd master in 31:44 (6:22 pace) in the 8k, and 14th woman and 5th master in 3:13:24 (7:23 pace) in the marathon. This was Jen's last race as a 49-year old -- her new senior competitors won't be looking over their shoulders for her as much as staring at her back.
[Was this Jennifer's fastest marathon? No. On October 13, 2002, she ran 2:47:37 in Chicago to qualify for the 2004 Olympic Trials.]
