JAVA VILLAGE NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2021

TEN NEW SaS STUDENTS SELECTED

We are happy to announce that ten new students have been selected to enrol in our SaS programme this school year. Schools are open again in the area but under restrictions. Each class is divided into two sessions of two hours with fifteen students in each. Lessons take place in classes on two days a week, with lessons being given on-line on the other three. All teachers at the SMP (Sekolah Menengah Pertama, junior high school) have been vaccinated.

In the village vaccinations are done by the health workers from the health centre. The elderly and vulnerable people of the village, health workers, teachers and school children above 12 years of age have been vaccinated. It seems that the Covid-19 pandemic is under control in the village and there have been no new Corona cases for some time now.

In September our fieldworker Titi visited the village. Here you can see her with our new SaS students and their parents. We hope that they will have a very successful and happy time at their secondary schools and we wish them good luck!

Become a SaS Sponsor!

Please do not forget our Sponsor a Student project. This ongoing project supports young pupils so that they can continue their education after primary school. The village doesn't have a secondary school and many families cannot afford the cost of going to a school outside the village. The Sponsor a Student project helps these families. Since the beginning of the project in 2008 Java Village has already helped 120 pupils to go to a junior high school. You can support a student by donating € 12,50 per month or € 150 per year. Please go to our website for additional information about how you can become a SaS sponsor.

Sales and promotion event for Java Village

For the first time in nearly two years (our last event was at Zilpa's beads exhibition sale in November 2019) Java Village was present at an event with a sales stall. It was lovely to again be able to meet people interested in our work and to sell our special products from Indonesia. All proceeds will go to Java Village. The event was held at Duinzigt, a former day and boarding school in the village of Oegstgeest, near Leiden. Presently this historic building is a working place for several small companies. The location was open to the public on the occasion of the Open Monuments Day in Holland on September 11.

Thanks to Silvy and her Indonesian 'Angkringan' friends in Leiden there were lots of Indonesian snacks. They flew away like hot cakes. The proceeds from the food sales were all for Java Village. Thanks to Hans Kleijn for the photos.

We are very happy that with the proceeds of this event we can support five pupils for a full year at SMP!!

Maria Peters Scholarship

Two talented pupils have been selected to continue the second phase of their secondary school education in the coming school year. We wish them a happy time at their new schools.

The scholarship is an extension of our SaS project, which supports pupils from the village to go to junior high school (SMP). The Maria Peters Scholarship makes it possible for talented and motivated students to complete their education by going to a senior high school (SMA) or following a vocational education (SMK). The costs for senior high school or vocational school are much higher than the costs for junior high school, because the government asks a school fee for the second phase of secondary schooling. This means that the total costs for three years are € 1650 (€ 550 per year per pupil), compared to € 450 for three years of junior high school (there is no school fee for SMP). Understandably, senior high school is a heavy burden for parents, and support for these students is highly appreciated.

The scholarship was founded in memory of Maria Peters, one of the first supporters of Java Village, who sadly passed away in 2016. In honour of her, her family took the initiative, together with Java Village, to establish this special grant for excellent students. On our website you can find additional information about this scholarship and how you can support it. Please click here.
