Spring is here and things are certainly growing in the gardens around the Mills Campus, especially weeds. Unfortunately, AISD doesn't provide maintenance of these area. If we can't get volunteers to do it, it just doesn't get done. While we do what we can during work days and on our own time, we just don't have the bandwidth to give all these areas the attention they need.
Please be aware that we also don't have the bandwidth to do any follow up watering of anything you might plant. We do have a number of garden hoses around campus and can certainly show you where the closest hose bibb is to the area you adopt. As long as you stick to plants adapted to our climate, most can survive on their own after the first summer.
If you adopt one of these areas inside the fence, either myself (Brad Bressler) or Wes Ward will coordinate with you to unlock the gate.
Below is a diagram of the areas as they're noted sign up genius. Some just need minor TLC and some are a blank slate. There's a brief description for each area.
Thanks in advance for helping to keep Mills beautiful!

Landscaping Volunteers: Part 2
The Mills Dirt Club is fortunate to have a riding lawnmower that's been gifted to us recently.
Now, it's that time of year to put it to work, and we're looking for volunteers to do so!
AISD is on an approximately six week mowing cycle for the campuses. Needless to say, things tend to get pretty rough in between mowings, especially this time of year. I think if we can add just one mowing during the growing season between AISD mowings, things will be much more manageable.
Mowing the main areas that can be done with the riding mower is the top priority. I'll coordinate with you to get inside the gates and access the mower. If you want to get into any tighter spots with a push mower and/or weed eater, that's certainly much appreciated though. Unfortunately, we don't have those items, so you'll have to bring your own. We can provide or reimburse you for items like gas and trimmer string though.
For the initial mowing, I'll team up with whoever volunteers. I'll need to walk ahead of the mower to pick up rocks. This is something we were hoping to take care of during a Dirt Club work day ahead of time, but other priorities always seemed to get in the way. In theory, it should be smooth sailing after that.
I've broken the sign up slots up by month. We'll try that for our maiden voyage this year and see how it goes. For the purposes of the sign up, I listed the first of the month. During your month, just use judgement when it needs it. If it dries out in the summer, you may get lucky and not even have to mow!
Thanks again, everyone!
