SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

During Q4 2021, a number of articles were published in the IOS Press journal issues that cover the topic of SDGs and these are highlighted in a dedicated section on our website. Here, we share some extracts.

Food balance sheets provide information on food security, indicators of the prevalence of undernourishment and losses in the cases of Benin, Guinea and Mali (Research Article), Statistical Journal of the IAOS, Madior Fall: "The prevalence of undernourishment is an indicator of access to food and an indicator of the SDGs, with SDG 12 aiming to 'guarantee sustainable consumption and production methods.' To achieve this objective, it is necessary to be able to assess food losses before any intervention aimed at reducing them. The UN agencies responsible for the evaluation of food losses propose to split them into: a part concerning food losses measured by the Global Food Loss Index; and another part relating to food waste, the indicator of which is the Food Waste Index."

Statistics on difficult to measure population groups: Leaving no-one not-included (Editorial), Statistical Journal of the IAOS, Pieter Everaers: "The 2030 agenda makes a clear commitment to inclusiveness, and many of the SDG indicators aim to include data on the most vulnerable and marginalized groups. The role for the international organizations is, alongside their mandate as custodian of specific SDGs, to develop and maintain clear guidelines and standards for producing and disseminating harmonized data on these issues and guarantee the integrated approach of statistical information of these groups with all other groups and the total population."

Rent Soil Theory Versus Sustainable Development Goals in Indonesia: Environment Law Perspective (Research Article), Environmental Policy and Law, P.W.H. Hananto et al.: The paper covers Indonesia’s rent soil theory – a policy that aims to increase state revenue through the imposition of rent for forest land along with natural resources (wood, lumber, stable soil, etc.). "This practice is contrary to the principle under SDG 15, which promotes sustainable management of all types of forest. It exposes the land owned by indigenous people to the threat by the State under the guise of its social function."

METADATA RESEARCH
We are collaborating with Tobias Kuhn and Cristina-Iulia Bucur from VU University Amsterdam on a project relating to linkflow and nanopublications. It highlights the need for semantically-enriched articles to make publishing more transparent and machine-interpretable. The focus is on a unified and semantic publication model based on nanopublications that can make scientific communication more effective and user-friendly.

A New Approach to Scientific Publishing Using Semantic Web Technologies, by Cristina-Iulia Bucur

"We currently disseminate, share, and evaluate scientific findings following paradigms of publishing where the only difference from the methods of more than 300 years ago is the medium in which we publish – we have moved from printed articles to digital format, but still use almost the same natural language narrative with long coarse-grained text with complicated structures. These are optimized for human readers and not for automated means of organization and access. Additionally, peer reviewing is the main method of quality assessment, but these peer reviews are rarely published and have their own complicated structure, with no accessible links to the respective articles.

With the increasing number of articles being published, it is difficult for researchers to stay up to date in their specific fields, unless we find a way to involve machines as well in this whole process. So, how can we make use of the current technologies to change these old paradigms of publishing and make the process more transparent and machine-interpretable?"

Argument & Computation
Open Access Journal

Since launching in 2010, Argument & Computation (AAC) has been providing a dedicated venue for the dissemination of high quality papers concerning state-of-the-art advancements in the field of computational argumentation, led by the Editors-in-Chief Pietro Baroni (University of Brescia, Italy) and Bart Verheij (University of Groningen, the Netherlands).

Special Issue on Argumentation Schemes in Artificial Intelligence
The new latest content published by AAC is a special issue, with guest editor Fabrizio Macagno (Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, Portugal), that provides a twofold contribution to the complex arena of argumentation schemes in artificial intelligence. On the one hand, it addresses some fundamental challenges, both theoretical and applicative, by advancing new proposals. On the other hand, it maps the uses of argumentation schemes in artificial intelligence from the perspective of three broad fields of application, namely biology, international relations, and law.
