Honoring Those Who Have Honored Us

November is all about gathering with family and friends to celebrate our blessings. We have so much to be thankful for, there’s a day singled out for it. It’s called Veteran’s Day.

While much is made of Thanksgiving Day, without the men and women who willingly served their country, we wouldn’t have the freedom to worship, live, work, eat, shop, and play the way we want. So before we sit down to enjoy a plethora of food, let’s acknowledge the many who sacrificed everything to provide the life we live.

Veteran’s Day is always celebrated on November 11, to commemorate the end of hostilities of WWI. At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, Germany and the allies signed an agreement to end the war. One year later, the first observance of this historic event was celebrated, initially called Armistice Day. The name was changed to Veterans Day after WWII to honor all veterans.

So how can we thank our veterans, active duty military, and their families? We start by thanking those we come into contact with every day with a handshake and a heartfelt “Thanks for your service.” Every veteran deserves the personal thanks of those he or she honored by serving. Then check out the list below for other tangible ways to show your gratitude and appreciation for their work.

Folds of Honor - Providing educational scholarships to spouses and children of America’s fallen and disabled service members

Vietnam Vets of America - Advocating for veterans young and old

National Coalition of Homeless Vets - Providing support and services for homeless veterans

Officer Down Memorial Page - Remembering all of law enforcement’s heroes

Wounded Warrior Project - Donate, raise funds, or spread the word to help warriors get back on track and become a positive force in their communities

Concerns of Police Survivors - Rebuilding shattered lives of those affected by line of duty deaths

Whether you have the funds for a donation, have children who would enjoy drawing something to give to a local vet, or can send a letter to someone serving today, there are countless ways to honor those who have provided the freedoms we often take for granted.

This month, be thankful in word and in action.
