Need an excuse to get outside and soak up the sunshine? With the long winter behind us, we've got lots of ways you can jump in this week! Join us Sunday for the Earth Day Festival, or take part in the three days of action that Rising Tide has organized, especially Tuesday's rally at Cuomo's office! Or hang with creative college students at the Earth Day Cabaret at City College, a film fest at John Jay, or Earth Stock at Stonybrook, Long Island.

Did you hear about the Whitney action? We couldn't tell you about it before, since planning was top secret, but the New York Times and many art journals covered it. It's created quite a stir, and brought renewed attention to the Spectra pipeline. Check it out below; it won't be the last time activist creativity blows the whistle on fossil fuels!

Sunday, 12-6pm: Outreach in Union Square

earth day

Earth Day NY Festival Look for our red tent in Union Square, noon-6pm, where there'll be all kinds of food, music and activism! Can you spare an hour to volunteer? We'd love your company gathering petition signatures, helping people write postcards against Port Ambrose, or just giving our team a break for 10 minutes. Just show up when you can and wear your biggest smile!

Monday Night: Art Build in Dumbo!

burgers

Did you see the fantastic animated fast food burgers that were created for the FIGHT FOR 15 march? Did you love the giant butterflies and methane molecules at the People's Climate March? Do you understand that one of the true creative forces in New York right now is the Puppet Studio, and one of their key artists is also the Outreach Coordinator for Sane Energy Project?

Kim Fraczek has built artwork for dozens if not hundreds of actions, and on Monday night, she'll be leading yet another art build at the Puppet Studio to prepare for Tuesday's rally at Cuomo's office. We're not going to tell you what's coming, but trust us, YOU WANT TO BE A PART OF IT. Prior artistic talent NOT REQUIRED. Just show up and Kim will show you what to do. It's easy, fun and community-building. As was quoted in the Tim DeChristopher documentary, Bidder 70, "Never underestimate the power of people painting a banner together." 7pm til late, 20 Jay Street, 2nd floor, walk down left hallway and look for the open door where people are having a ball. (F train to York Street, walk downhill towards river.)

Rising Tide NYC has organized a rolling set of actions to mark Earth Week, working in solidarity with grassroots organizations in that bottom-up, consensus-driven way we like!

Monday, 8am: BP Anniversary March, Lower East Side

gulf

April 20th marks the fifth year since the Deepwater Horizon disaster. Gulf South Rising is calling for action, and Rising Tide is amplifying that call. Join us for a procession in solidarity with the people of the gulf whose lives and economy were ruined by BP. 8am MONDAY: Meet at Sara Roosevelt Park at Houston & Chrystie Streets, Manhattan. F train to 2nd Ave, map. Wear black and white for a Jazz funeral!

Tuesday, 5pm: Port Ambrose Rally at Cuomo's Office

buoy-close

April 21st Rising Tide teams with Sane Energy Project for a creative action against Port Ambrose LNG, in solidarity with New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania communities who are fighting the Constitution Pipeline, the AIM Pipeline, oil trains, pipelines and barges along the Hudson River, and too many other destructive projects. Governor Cuomo has the power to veto Port Ambrose and stop the wholesale destruction of upstate by infrastructure.
5pm, TUESDAY: Gather at Cuomo's office: 633 Third Avenue (at 41st street)

Wednesday, 5:30pm: Earth Day at City Hall

iu

April 22nd marks the release of PlaNYC (New York's official climate action plan). Join us to demand a new way forward for our energy system and economy. We must change, and justice demands that workers, low income communities and communities of color, who have disproportionately suffered under the old system, be at the forefront of that change.

Did you hear about the Whitney Action?

ribbon erik

On a late night last week, in what has since been dubbed an "art caper," a surprise "inauguration," including a ceremonial ribbon cutting by Guerrilla Girl, "Frida Kahlo," took place at the site of the soon-to-open Whitney museum, bringing renewed attention to the Spectra pipeline, the vault of which sits below the building’s cantilevered design. The action was organized by a collaborative of international art and environmental groups, led by Occupy Museums, Occupy the Pipeline, Liberate Tate, and Sane Energy Project. The collective have sent an open letter to the Whitney, asking for answers to six questions.

Sane Energy Project was founded because of the Spectra pipeline. On the day the pipeline went into service, in 2013, fourteen of us, including the local Councilman, were arrested for blocking traffic on the West Side Highway. For us, it's important to remind the public of what sits beneath this shiny new museum, and the related fracking and pollution from compressor stations that happens at the "other end of the pipe," as well as the outrageous proposals that Spectra Energy continues to put in front of FERC, such as building a pipeline next to Indian Point. We were proud to be a part of this action. Full recap here.

During the action, The Illuminator projected a film onto the building’s blank walls, pointing to the pipeline and showing scenes of earlier protests when the pipeline had been under construction, plus storm scenes from Hurricane Sandy (video at link).
