About the Program

The triangular stamps of the Cape of Good Hope (COGH) are among the most iconic in philately. Issued on 1st September 1853, they were the world’s first triangular stamps. They have been sought after by collectors ever since the hobby of stamp collecting began in the 19th Century. Through happenstance, I needed to know more about these stamps in order to preserve some posts in the online philatelic website, The Stamp Forum (TSF), and now they have become one of my collecting passions, culminating in a technical article about Cape Triangles, published in September 2022.

Christopher's goal is to build on the seminal work of D. Alan Stevenson by trying to systematically link catalogue number identifications to certified examples from organizations with experienced expertizers specifically for Cape Triangles, as supported by evidence from Stanley Gibbons, the acknowledged source of the preeminent catalogue listings in the field.

This presentation will describe a bit about his philatelic and professional backgrounds, how he came to learn about Cape Triangles, online resources for telling genuine stamps from forgeries, and how to apply other resources to proper identification.

Chis's approach can be used in other collecting areas - a specialization or deep interest in Cape of Good Hope is not required to appreciate the techniques Chris developed.

The British Empire Study Group invites you to join us on March 9th at 6:00 pm ET when Christopher Dorn presents "De-Mystifying the Line-Engraved Cape of Good Hope Triangles".
