C-225-Defeated

WEDNESDAY'S VOTE ON BILL C-225:

It is with great disappointment that we report that Cassie and Molly's Law was voted down in the House of Commons Wednesday night and Bill C-225 is now considered "dead".

The final vote was 209 nays to 76 votes in support of sending the Bill to the committee stage to be studied and revised. The entire Liberal, NDP and Bloc parties voted against the bill, as did three Conservative Party members, including CPC leadership candidate Michael Chong.

MOLLY'S LIFE MATTERS

Jeff Durham, Nancy Kaake and MP Cathay Wagantall have all worked tirelessly to see justice served for Molly and for all of the thousands of pregnant Canadian women and their pre-born children who are victims of crime in this nation every year. Although not the result we had wanted or expected, their hard work has ensured that Molly will be remembered by many. We are so proud of all that their labours have accomplished and know that we are so much closer to achieving legislation to protect unborn victims of crime in Canada because of them.

Jeff, Nancy, and Cathy; we thank you. Molly matters to us.

LESSONS WE CAN LEARN FROM C-225:

Our government has rejected the opportunity to protect women during pregnancy and has refused to acknowledge that the loss of the smallest members of Canadian families are both deeply felt and recognized. Most tragically, they have denied the possibility of justice being served when two lives are lost in the commission of a crime.

However, the support that Bill C-225 raised from all across the nation shows us that Canadians are ready to fight for the protection of our most vulnerable citizens.
