ELMS - 4 Heures de Silverstone (GBR) - R4

Alors que le plateau ELMS est entré dans sa deuxième partie de saison, l’équipe Franco-Suisse Cool Racing s’est organisée un très gros week-end sur le circuit de Silverstone. En effet, après avoir signé son premier podium lors de la troisième manche à Barcelone et participé au Prologue WEC dans la foulée, le team a dû travailler d’arrache pieds pour préparer ses deux LMP2 Oreca07 ELMS et WEC pour le premier rendez-vous mondial de la saison et le 4e rendez-vous européen. Un peu d’appréhension mais beaucoup de motivation et de détermination, telles étaient les clés d’un week-end chargé.

L’ORECA#37 de Nicolas Lapierre, Alexandre Coigny et Antonin Borga a dû abandonner suite à un accident à 1h20 de la fin de la course.

Les 4 Heures de Silverstone ELMS

On aurait pu s’attendre un week-end bien britannique avec de la pluie à tout moment, mais non. Toutes les séances d’essais se déroulaient sur piste sèche. La première séance libre était réduite à 30 minutes (au lieu de 90) par un accident nécessitant des réparations sur la piste. Alexandre Coigny pouvait découvrir la piste et reprendre ses marques au volant de sa voiture durant la deuxième séance libre. En qualification, Nicolas Lapierre réalisait le 4e meilleur chrono permettant à Antonin Borga de prendre le départ depuis la deuxième ligne.

Antonin Borga prenait le départ des 4 Heures de Silverstone sous une météo menaçante « à l’anglaise »… en effet après deux petits tours, la pluie s’invitait sur la piste et engendrait un ballet de passages dans les box pour passer des pneus adaptés aux conditions météo. Si la plupart des équipes chaussaient des « pluie », chez Cool Racing, on faisait le choix des intermédiaires, une opération payante, puisqu’Antonin parvenait à remonter de P7 à P4 au 16e tour. Le premier arrêt au stand a été perturbé par les teams voisins qui ont empêché Antonin de s’arrêter correctement et faisait perdre de précieuses secondes à la #37.

Après 19 tours, l’ORECA07 #37 ressortait en 12e position. Antonin repartait à la chasse et grappillait quelques positions pour remettre la voiture à Nicolas Lapierre après 40 tours et 1h22 en P10. Nico partait à la lutte avec Algarve Pro Racing (Olivier Pla) qu’il doublait au 49e tour et complétait un parfait relais. Après 2h15, un Safety Car était déployé durant 20 minutes suite à un accident entre une LMP3 et une LMP2.

Nico remettait alors la voiture à Alexandre Coigny. Alors que la voiture de sécurité rentrait dans les box et que la meute reprenait ses droits, Alexandre Coigny alors en P5 était victime d’un accrochage avec une P3 qui le mettait dans une position indélicate au beau milieu de la piste avant de se faire percuter violemment par la #30 du team Duqueine Engineering. Fin de la course après 77 tours.

Alexandre a été pris en charge par le centre médical du circuit qui a choisi le faire transporter à l’hôpital pour procéder à une série d’examens complémentaires. Alex a décidé de ne pas prendre part aux 4 Heures de Silverstone WEC.

The European Le Mans Series competitors started the second part of the season at British race track this weekend and French-Swiss team Cool Racing had to get prepared for a very busy event. In fact, after completing a first podium finish in Barcelona last month, and taking part in the WEC prologue, the team had to work hard to get two Oreca07 LMP2, one for Round 4 of the ELMS season, the second one for the first FIAWEC meeting. Mixed feelings, a lot of great motivation and determination were the keys to the event.

Number #37 Oreca07 of Alexandre Coigny, Antonin Borga and Nicolas Lapierre, unfortunately was forced to withdraw after an accident just 1:20 hour before the end.

The 4 Hours of Silverstone ELMS

One could have though that the typical British weather would have been part of the game this weekend, but almost not. All practice sessions took place on a dry track. First FP1 was shortened to 30 minutes (instead of 90) because of an accident that required the marshals to work on the track. Alexandre Coigny had finally the chance to discover the circuit and get the car feeling during FP2. Nicolas Lapierre qualified #37 LMP2 in fourth position which gave Antonin the task to start from second row.

Antonin Borga started the race knowing that soon the weather conditions could change, and in fact, only two laps after the green flag, the rain poured on the Silverstone circuit. Obviously all the teams came in to pass WET tires, but Cool Racing team chose to pass Intermediates, which was a perfect move, as Antonin could move up from P7 to P4 at lap 16. His first pitstop was slowed down because of the neighbor team that hindered Antonin to park correctly in front of the box, unfortunately this made him loose some very precious seconds. After 19 laps, #37 Oreca was back on track in P12, and Antonin went hunting for some places back.

After 40 laps, he passed on the wheel to Nicolas Lapierre in P10. The French went fighting to catch up and had some great moves such as the one on AlgarvePro Racing passing Olivier Pla in lap 49. After another perfect stint and the entry of the safety car on track due to an accident involving a P3 and a P2, Nico handed the car to Alexandre Coigny.

The Swiss driver was P5 when the safety car was over and the competitor pack restarted harshly. Alex had a contact with a P3, which put his car in a very bad position in the middle of the track, were he was badly hit by #30 Duqueine Engineering LMP2. End of the race for Cool Racing after 77 laps. Alexandre Coigny was taken to the Silverstone Circuit Medical Center, whose doctor decided to have him transported to the hospital for further investigation. Alexandre decided to not take part at the WEC 4 Hours of Silverstone.
