The Highlands Composite Team getting their snow ride on!

Greetings Friends and Family, and happy 2018!

Our second season is in full swing, and despite the cold snap of weather we have experienced over the last month, our teams are getting on their bikes and having a blast!

They are riding outside, hitting the spin gym or trainer, and getting together with teammates for bike maintenance and team building.

Some students are training with goals of stepping onto the podium in April, and some are just learning how to ride. Strong body, mind and character indeed.

In this issue we begin talking more about the upcoming race series. Expect communication from the league to become more frequent as we get closer to the spring.

Parents & Students, are you thinking of trying out a race, but not sure what its all about? Did you know that 90% of NICA students across the country have never participated in a race prior to joining? Our races are a pro-level production! They offer a safe and fun atmosphere for student athletes to ride with friends from around the state. Check out the articles below for more info, and as always feel free to email info@newjerseymtb.org with any questions.

Happy trails,

Ken & The NICA NJ Staff

Fun, camaraderie, physical challenge -- did we mention fun? You’ll be blown away by what awaits you at a NICA race: more teenagers on bikes in one location than you have ever seen before, a race venue with a true pro-circuit feel, fun race courses and more. 400 6th through 12th grade students at a race, in New Jersey?! Welcome to the NJ Mountain Bike Revolution!

For more info on our racing venues, check out the 2018 Racing Season page on our website. There you will find links to Strava and GPX files for each race course, as well as links to Race Fliers as they become available. The fliers will be your go-to documents during race season, and summarize the critical information you’ll need to know about each race, including directions, a race-course description, start times, lap counts, and pre-ride times.

Finally, check out the Quick Start Guide to Attending NICA Races (for Parents and Riders) for more information on what to expect at your first NICA race.

It is NICA and League policy that student-athletes compete in appropriate competitive peer groups and to prevent strategic gamesmanship in category placement.

If you have extensive racing or riding experience, and believe you are ready to race in a higher category than your default, please complete the Petition Form with your coach and submit to League Director Ken Seebeck.

Petitions for an upgrade in categories will only be granted upon a showing that:

a. The student-athlete’s performance and experience level clearly exceeds the level of all other riders competing in the category, i.e., no other rider in the same category has a reasonable chance of being competitive with the student seeking the upgrade;

b. The upgrade will place the student into a more appropriate competitive peer group.

Please do not delay your petition request! we have to order race plates in February, and to receive a custom plate we need your racing category.

The rules and petition committee is meeting very soon to establish procedures for processing requests, and will hear petitions as they are received.

The League's "Try it Out" Program is scheduled to launch in early March! Thanks to the incredible generosity of the Carolan Foundation, we are able to offer a minimum of 8 rides throughout 2018.

Try it out rides will target beginner level students, or those who have not yet heard of our awesome program. The league is working hard on outfitting a trailer with really nice bikes and gear, which will roll up to a school or a ride venue and allow students to "Try Mountain Biking!" Even cooler, all new students who participate will receive a commemorative tshirt!

Keep an eye out for ride dates and information on how to try it out. Coaches and existing teams: If you are interested in hosting a try-it-out event, shoot us an email!

Did you know that thanks to our sponsors, we are able to offer loaner bikes and scholarships to student athletes around the state?

To request a loaner bike, the student must be "practice ready" in the PitZone software. After that, parents should speak to the team's head coach or team director, who will send a Loaner Bike Request form. Once the form is filled out and submitted, we will process the request and get a bike to the student.

For those who are in financial need, scholarships are available. We do not want finances to be a barrier to joining our league. Email ken@newjerseymtb.org to receive the one page & confidential application.
