Ride in Peace, VW

In Memory of Volker Weiss

On Thursday, July 27th, Volker Weiss (VW) was riding his bicycle on Maui, when he was hit and killed by a person driving a vehicle in a dangerous manner.

HBL extends our condolences to VW’s family, friends, and the riding community on Maui. This is a tragic event that no family or community should experience.

His family has contacted HBL regarding a memorial fund to advocate for safer streets. HBL will continue advocating for better awareness, roadway design, enforcement, and more. The local riding community is planning a Ride of Silence on Sunday, August 6th. We have set up a memorial fund page as well. Ride in Peace.

August Advocacy Committee Meeting

The HBL Advocacy Committee will be getting together later in August. This committee hasn't met in some time, so we're excited to get it going again. If you are interested in participating and discussing upcoming advocacy efforts, campaigns, and overall focuses for the organization, please click here to fill out your availability.

Welcome & Congrats: New Bicycle Instructors!

Over the weekend of July 14, HBL hosted a League of American Bicyclists (LAB) League Cycling Instructor (LCI) Seminar. The intensive twenty-three-hour seminar focused on helping candidates master and teach the concepts and skills of safe vehicular cycling, both inside the classroom and on-bike out on the road. We would like to thank the nine candidates that completed the rigorous training in order to teach bicycle safety and skills to others: Jake, Scott, Jennifer (Kaua‘i), Chuck (Maui), Erron, Bill, Jeff, and Dorian. Congratulations!
