Why Should I Believe in the Gospel?

By Kevin Moore

The word “gospel” essentially means “good news” or “glad tidings,” but to fully appreciate the message of the gospel one must first be aware of the bad news to which it is contrasted. The bad news is that all accountable human beings have been separated from God because of sin (Romans 3:10-23). But the good news is that God still loves us, wants us all to be saved, and has provided the necessary means (Romans 5:8-11). Jesus is the Saviour of all who obey Him (Hebrews 5:8-9), involving hearing and believing the gospel message of Christ (Acts 2:37; 8:12), repenting of sins (Acts 3:19), confessing faith in the Lord Jesus (Romans 10:9), being baptized for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38), and remaining faithful until death (Acts 14:22; Revelation 2:10). The bad news is: “wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it” (Matthew 7:13b). The good news is: “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2b).

Now What?

Read through chapter 53 of the Old Testament book of Isaiah this week, and compare the suffering servant of that passage with Jesus of Nazareth. Many modern day Jews have admitted that a thoughtful reading of that passage with Jesus in mind is enough to convert anyone who does not yet believe that Jesus is "the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16).
