Draft Declaration of Climate Emergency

As the pandemic hit, we were in the process of sending a draft Declaration of Climate Emergency to the City Common Council for review and vote. In July we agreed to resend the draft to Rennie Scott Childress, Majority Leader. As the Declaration is discussed by the Common Council, it broadens the discussion in the community. If accepted, (as Ulster County did in 2019), it can form the basis of specific demands based on the need for public safety.

Just Transition - is it different from the Transition Town movement?

At the July meeting, Micah, of the Good Work Institute, explained that the two concepts are separate but aligned. The Transition Town movement is a global movement, developed through the principles of permaculture and one that initially focused on building resilience in the face of peak oil and climate changes. Both movements agree that transition is happening - Just Transition asks: will it be just?
Just Transition emerged from the labor and environmental activists who were looking to move workers out of polluting industries and protecting their rights as they transitioned to sustainable work environments and opportunities for equitable wealth distribution. It is driven by racial and social justice, ecological restoration, as well as local production and consumption. Like the Transition Town movement, Just Transition works on democratizing communities and the workplace and on restoring cultures and traditions. CLICK HERE for a short video about Just Transition. The Good Work Institute will be holding a Just Transition Primer workshop on September 16th CLICK HERE for more details
Just Transition's objectives are today shared by the Transition Town movement, which is still focussed on the needs and opportunities that arise in local communities and individuals as we transition beyond fossil fuels and today’s ecological challenges. The Real Work

It may be that when we no longer know

what to do

we have come to our real work

and that when we no longer know

which way to go

we have come to our real journey.

The mind that is not baffled is not

employed.

The impeded stream is the one that sings

Wendell Barry
