Family

When you look at your family what do you see? Or better yet, who do you see? A father, mother, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, grandfather, and grandmother? Typically, yes. But do they represent your family? To find out we need to know what is a family. Several definitions exist according to Dermott and Fowler (2020). In David H. J. Morgan (2011) book, he found a family conveys "a sense of the active everyday work of individuals producing and maintaining family life." Look closely at your family. Who do you see? Who are the members of your immediate family? Do you visualize a father, son, and daughter? Or a mother and three daughters. Maybe you see a father, mother, son, daughter, and grandparents. What about a mother and significant other and two sons. What do you see? Now that you see your family members, who are they, and what is your definition of family? Is each individual in your family actively working every day to maintain a good family life? Are they doing their part, carrying out their role?

Did You Know?

Interpersonal communication skills start with basic listening skills. For good communication to occur between you and another person listening has to take place. You may think listening is basic information everyone knows. Unfortunately, everyone does not know how listen. And listening is often confused with hearing. To know what basic listening skills are, watch this TedTalks presentation Five ways to listen better speaker Julian Treasure.

Some of us are not good listeners. Admit it!. When we listen our focus is not on the speaker, who could be our spouse, a child, or a friend. Give the speaker your full attention. Stop what you are doing and listen. To know what we think when someone else is speaking, watch the next TedTalk presentation Words your most powerful weapon speaker Evy Poumpouras (What are we thinking when someone else is speaking? See answer below.)

Interested to know your interpersonal communication skills score? If you find others misunderstand you often, the Interpersonal Communication Skills Test may be helpful. Take this Psychology Today Interpersonal Communication Skills Test to find out.

And thank you for your support.

Question: When someone else is speaking what are we often thinking?
Answer: What am I going to say in response? When will I get to speak?
Instead focus on the speaker to be able to respond appropriately.

Kind regards,
Your Team at LJ2, Inc.
