Federal Grant Will Fund Critical Repairs at Bus Maintenance Facility

U.S. Senator Jack Reed recently announced that RIPTA has been awarded a new 3.2 million grant for major repair work to its vehicle maintenance facility. The federal funding is being provided through the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Bus and Bus Facilities Infrastructure Program.

The grant will enable RIPTA to make much-needed repairs to its 107,000-square foot Chafee Operations, Transportation and Maintenance Facility located on Elmwood Avenue in Providence. The grant will help repair the building’s roof, HVAC system and vehicle lifts. RIPTA handles all of its own vehicles and it also works on some heavy equipment owned by the state. RIPTA’s vehicle maintenance team performs everything from oil changes to engine overhauls and body work.

“Every day we need a specific number of buses to be ready to roll so we can meet our schedule and serve the public, and we rely on our maintenance facility and our maintenance crews to make sure that happens,” said Scott Avedisian, CEO of RIPTA. “This building is in need of some critical work, and without this grant we weren’t sure how we were going to be able to make these capital improvements. We are grateful to Senator Reed for supporting this important funding request and making sure that a vital maintenance facility remains operational and in a state of good repair.”

PUBLIC ART AND AIRPORTS

Making the journey -- not just the destination -- more interesting, the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts (RISCA) recently announced two new art exhibitions at T.F. Green Airport and Block Island Airport.

The GREEN SPACE gallery at T.F. Green is featuring abstract works by artists Robin Crocker, Mike Hansel and Jacqueline Ott, with circular shapes taking center stage. At the Block Island Airport, artist Becci Davis combines words and collages to tell local stories.

Congratulations to the Arts Council on enhancing transportation spaces with these new installations of public art!
