UND Proposes Drastic Tuition Increases As Soon As State Senate Defeats Tuition Reform Bill

Higher Ed Spending

It has barely been two weeks since the North Dakota State Senate killed the House's attempt to reign in higher education, and bring some sort of sanity to the system's ability to raise tuition rates on students.

Like clockwork whenever the legislature shows weakness toward higher education, university official pounce on student's financial futures.

According to the Grand Forks Herald, the University of North Dakota is seeking to drastically increase its tuition rates.

UND is considering changing the tuition model as soon as the fall of 2016, according to documents obtained by the Herald.

Two of three options laid out in draft proposals suggest tuition increases of either 10.5 percent or 12.3 percent over this year for students enrolling in 15 credits.

UND is being very cute about it, claiming this is a plan to encourage students to graduate sooner. While that may happen is a few cases, this is more likely to cause students to take longer to graduate if they are like many (such as myself) who had to work while going to college.

This is just one more way the higher education system spits in the eye of the legislature, and makes House members wonder why the Senate just does not get it.

The Senate should in fact be the most upset about this.

Perhaps enough will be angry enough to revisit the issue.
