Hi ...

There’s loads of stuff on social media telling women how to be. More confident, more organised, more assertive, more spiritual, more business savvy, more conscious, more of who you really are (mea culpa!) More of just about everything you can think of. This, of course, helps us believe we are ‘less than’ or ‘not good enough.’

As if we needed reminding!

I had a patch of this recently. Plus a touch of the ‘frauds’… Who did I think I was to be banging on about #daretobeyou ? My enthusiasm and motivation disappeared. I just wanted to eat crap food and slob out in front of the television. The anti-life gremlins had me big time.

This is what happens when you push yourself beyond your comfort zone. Or when you fear going beyond your comfort zone. Your primitive and reptilian brain sees danger everywhere even when there is none. And, through its anti-life gremlin cohorts, it often renders you ineffective. Better ineffective than put yourself out there, eh?

My first memory of how I consciously learned about danger was at four. Outside the ‘mother and baby’ clinic was a small wall which demanded walking on. I was confidently making my way along its top when my mother, busily showing off my new-born sister, suddenly noticed me.

She yelled at full volume, ‘Sharon, get off that wall. You’ll fall and hurt yourself.’

This was an instantaneous self-fulfilling prophecy as I started at her yell and lost balance. This led to me, amongst other things, never being able to ride a bike and feeling not good enough beside my bike riding peers. Comparing yourself adversely with others is another anti-life gremlin ‘not good enough’ trick.

See how the whole insidious system develops?

Anyhow, you don’t have to stay in a ‘not good enough’ or ‘I’m bound to get found out as a fraud’ funk. Know that you’re feeling this way because something new in you wants to be expressed or you’re challenging yourself to do something outside your comfort zone.

Here’s 3 things you can do to disidentify from the keeping-you-small negative stuff and regain your natural centredness.

1. Emphatically say, ‘bollocks’, or some other explosive swear word to the anti-life gremlins who pull you down. Imagine emptying an ice cold bucket of water complete with floating ice all over them. See what happens and repeat as necessary.
2. Write down how you’re feeling and the thoughts that make you feel that way. Get a sense of from whom or how you learned to have those thoughts. Put a red line through each one and write at the end of each, ‘THEY LIED.’ Notice how better you feel as you neutralise each thought.
3. Write on a load of post-its ‘I am more than good enough’ because you are! Plaster them around your home, in clothes’ drawers, in your diary, on the dashboard. These constant reminders will build the ‘I am more than good enough’ neural pathways in your brain and positively affect how you feel and perceive yourself.

And me? Out of my funk manifested a greater confidence, belief in and acceptance of my ‘bigness.’ There’ll be something similarly delicious for you out of yours, I promise…

Love to you…
