Summer 2019 Program Assistant position available!

24 hours a week at $15.00/hr over 10 weeks (240 total hours)
Hours will be scheduled according to Summer programming, gallery and event hours, in consultation with the individual once hired.

POSITION

The Program Assistant position is a paid mentorship opportunity for an individual between the ages of 19-30 who is interested in learning more about artist-run centres, arts administration, curating, installation, event coordinating, all with care and collaboration. The student will gain experience working directly alongside the Khyber's Artistic Director, fellow Program Assistant, Board of Directors and committees to design and accommodate our Summer membership drive.

TASKS

▪ Co-organizing a membership exhibition, events, shop redesign and online initiatives alongside staff, Board and committees.
▪ Developing and pursuing outreach plans for new membership, fundraising, approaching partners and expanding public access, while keeping member and donor lists updated (use of Excel and G Suite).
▪ Co-crafting and circulating calls for member submissions and programming, including the distribution of promotional material and daily use of Khyber social media (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, WordPress)
▪ Assembling display, handling and recording sales and shipments of Khyber Member Shop inventory.
▪ Gallery installation assistance, painting, prep work and maintenance for exhibitions and projects, with training from an installation technician.
▪ Maintaining a clean and organized work environment daily (e.g. sweeping, mopping, dusting, taking out garbage/recyclables, reorganizing storage of tools and equipment).
▪ Working with other staff and volunteers to oversee gallery during open hours and per public events (e.g. set-up/takedown and lifting of tables/chairs/equipment/decorations, potential use of a ladder, specific stationed tasks during such as bartending, door, event documentation, attendance counts and greetings).

ELIGIBILITY

Individuals must be between 19 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment and must be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.

The Khyber does not require the individual to be a student or to have any previous experience working for not-for-profit organizations, artist-run centres or galleries, however prioritizes applications from artists and the interview and hiring of those who are BIPOC and/or LGBTQ2S+. Assets to this position include: knowledge of or interest in art, music and artist-run culture and/or a background with event coordinating, community organizing, youth programming, social media and website suaveness, leading fundraising and/or outreach campaigns, installation, design, photography and/or video.

ACCESS

Most of the work for this position will take place at 1880 Hollis St. (see map). The main entrance to the space is up 2-steps from the sidewalk, however the mall entrance further down the block on Hollis St. can be used for ground level entry. There is a ground level all genders wheelchair accessible washroom and gender-neutral washroom stalls on site. No doors on the premise have buttons to press for automatic entry and all require a turn, push or pull. Lifting and physical labour tasks described above in TASKS can be assumed by other Khyber staff members. The two other employees working alongside this position speak and write fluently in English language only. The Khyber is not a dry space, although much of our programming is dry and for all-ages, we operate a licensed bar at some of our events and do have alcohol on site. We do not allow outside substances and all staff are to remain sober in the space.
