Keynote Speakers

MarkSquire2013.2-300x268

Mark Squire

Mark has been an owner and manager of Good Earth Natural Foods in Fairfax for the last 35 years. For much of this time Good Earth has been a leader in promoting and marketing organically grown foods, and a model for many other stores in the US.

Prior to his involvement with retailing, Mark managed his family’s farm in North Carolina and transitioned it to organics.

As a member of the California Certified Organic Farmers Board of Directors from 1983 to 1988, representing CCOF’s North Coast Chapter (Sonoma & Marin), he helped to write some of the original organic certification standards still in use nationally. Mark was on the board and then on staff with the Organic Crop Improvement Association for six years, starting in 1988. OCIA is the largest certifier of organic foods worldwide and Mark oversaw their international certification staff training and operations for both farm and manufacturing.

He is one of the original proponents and authors of Measure B, the Marin County initiative that prohibited the outdoor cultivation of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), which passed by 61% in 2004.

Temra Costa

Temra Costa has been advocating for a more sustainable food and farming system for more than a decade and is the award-winning author of Farmer Jane: Women Changing the Way We Eat. Prior to publishing her book, Temra inspired eaters and buyers to eat and buy more locally grown foods before local was a household name. She led the campaign to encourage consumers to buy locally produced food, serving as the Buy Fresh Buy Local campaign manager for Community Alliance with Family Farmers. During this time she helped publish local food guides across California while linking farmers to more retailers, restaurants and schools for greater viability. After successfully launching Farmer Jane, Temra focused on communications and sustainability programming as a consultant in the natural foods sector, with clients such as Clif Bar, Numi Inc., and Amy’s Kitchen. In July of 2016 Temra and her husband manifested their life dream of co-owning a farm, and soon to be educational center, on a 172-acre property just 20 minutes west of Sebastopol in Sonoma County. She lives and works on this eco-system rich land with her husband and their two young sons, Teo and Quin.

Temra Costa is a tireless advocate for small-scale and sustainable farming in California.

"Recently I spent a glorious weekend at Sabor Mexicano with my favorite friends and family members. We loved exploring the redwood forest on the property, playing volleyball on the grass, and marveling at the tallest corn we've ever seen -- a special breed which owner Jorge brought from Mexico. We went kayaking among the harbor seals in Jenner, at the confluence where the Russian River meets the mighty Pacific. Others enjoyed a long hike in nearby Armstrong Redwoods Park. Afterwards we relaxed together on the spacious front porch, looking out on the vast lawn and colorful fields. Now, more than ever, I appreciate the unique magic of this spot and the adventures and deep relaxation it inspires."
