Dear Friends, Fans & Family...
On the first of May, if you lived in medieval Scotland, you would have celebrated Beltane. Beltane marked the beginning of summer, the time when all the seeds had been planted and the cattle were ready to be driven out to the summer pastures.
On this night, special Beltane bonfires were built, and the flames, smoke, and ashes were thought to have protective powers over crops and cattle. Doors, windows, and even the cows themselves would be decked in yellow flowers to resemble flames. Then farmers would circle their cattle around the Beltane bonfires to receive their protection. (Some daring lads would leap over the fires!)
A great feast would follow, and a bit of food and drink would be left as an offering to appease the easily-offended sith--faerie folk who were considered spirits of nature.
If you plan to celebrate Beltane, be very careful with your bonfire-building. Better yet, save it for that Mother's Day barbecue! |

My daughter has never outgrown the Los Angeles Zoo, so we stole away for a mother-daughter visit with the animals! There are some amazing improvements since I last visited. The enclosures are larger and more animal-friendly, and there's lots of enrichment for them. This little guy is clearly enjoying the waterfall. |

For Easter, since most of my relatives live far away and my husband was on the road, it seemed silly to cook a big dinner for four. So the kids and I decided to do something different. After everyone got their obligatory Easter baskets, we went to one of our favorite buffets, Souplantation, for lunch. Then we donned these oh-so-cool 3D glasses for a viewing of "The Lego Batman Movie." Yes, it's definitely a must-see! |
When I got the rare and special opportunity to participate in Wolf Week in Sedona, Arizona last week. I didn't realize just how close my encounter would get! Meet Riggs, one of the rescue wolves from the Apex Protection Project. This yearling licked my face in greeting and was kind enough NOT to bite my fingers. These sensitive creatures are very intense and require lots of space and exercise. They're quite different from dogs and not meant to be pets, but they're so beneficial in the wild, keeping down rodent populations and maintaining the balance of the environment.
