Fall 2019 HELLO WORLD - After-school Computer Science / Coding Program
Given the great response we've received from the students and families engaged in the Hello World program, their team will be returning again this Fall 2019! The program will be starting earlier than usual (first day is August 26!) and we’re sharing this note now so families can plan ahead.
Hello World is an after-school computer science / coding program comprised of engineers from companies including Amazon, Apple, and Facebook. All courses are taught by professional software engineers, AI architects, and data scientists and are modeled after college computer science courses, particularly those at Rice University, a partnering institution.
To learn more about the Fall 2019 program, join Hello World for one of the following:
▪ Virtual Webinar Information Session - Sunday, June 2nd at 7pm
▪ Join us at this link: tinyurl.com/helloworldinfo
▪ In-person Information Session - Wednesday, August 21st at 3:15pm OR 5:00pm (choose one) at Mills Elementary School Library

The Fall 2019 program is centered around two computer science subjects for all students – Game Engineering, which will be taught by professional game developers, and Web Development, which will be taught by professional full-stack web developers. Students will be building real games and publishing websites and because all course materials mirror industry standards, students can continue to build their knowledge after the semester program ends. Hello World courses cover various major programming languages (HTML/CSS/JavaScript, C#, C/C++, Java, Python, and Swift) which are scoped out in 15 levels of achievement across all programming languages, starting with Level 1 (beginner) up to what is called Acumen (Level 15), which is equivalent to taking several graduate-level courses in that programming language. Given this and the self-paced nature of the program, returning students will only gain exposure to new curriculum and computer science concepts as they move up the levels. The program is open to all levels, including beginners, and students will be placed in levels based on previous exposure to coding / computer science concepts.
We strongly encourage girls to join the program - early exposure to computer science and engineering concepts improves confidence in the field and significantly increases students' likelihood of majoring in these subjects in college!
