Purpose. The purpose of the webinar is to provide an overview of NEHRP Seismic Design Technical Brief No. 12, Seismic Design of Cold-Formed Steel Lateral Load-Resisting Systems – A Guide for Practicing Engineers (NIST GCR-16-917-38). The webinar will provide: (1) an introduction to cold-formed steel (CFS) lateral load-resisting systems, including the distinctions between various categories; (2) an overview of the history of CFS load-bearing and lateral force-resisting systems; (3) an understanding of the evolution of American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) standards for CFS framing; (4) guidance regarding the analysis and seismic design of CFS systems; (5) an overview of relevant changes in AISI S400-20 and ASCE/SEI 7-16, and (6) other topics related to design, construction, and assessment of CFS systems.

Intended Audience. This webinar has been specifically designed for practicing structural engineers, but will also be useful for building officials, educators, researchers, and students.

Webinar Instructor.‎ Robert L. Madsen, P.E., is a principal engineer with Devco Engineering, Inc. in Enterprise, Oregon where he specializes in the design of cold-formed steel framing. He serves on the AISI Committee on Specifications and Committee on Framing Standards and he currently chairs the Lateral Subcommittee. He also serves as the chair of the Technical Review Committee of the Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute (CFSEI) and received that organization's Distinguished Service Award in 2014. He was one of three authors of Technical Brief No. 12.

Professional Development Hours (PDHs). Registrants who would like a PDH certificate (1.5 hours) must pay $25 through the ATC Online Store by the day of the webinar on December 16. Only those registrants who pay the $25 fee and who attend the full duration of the webinar will be provided a PDH certificate. Refunds are not available.
