[Stakeholder report] More attention needed to local stakeholders' and affected communities' engagement with the ICC

The Asser Institute and Amnesty International jointly released the report The Rome Statute at 40. It contains key findings and recommendations by experts and stakeholders on the future of the ICC and the ‘system’ of international justice created by the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the court. To improve the effectiveness of the ICC, the court and all its stakeholders should consider how more local stakeholders and affected communities can better engage with the court, the report finds.

KNAW award for Asser Associate Fellow Dimitri van den Meerssche

Dimitri van den Meerssche has received an Early Career Partnership Award from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). He will receive €10,000 to organise an interdisciplinary meeting on Legal Method, Methodology and Critique in a Digital Era, which will be the closing workshop of the hugely popular lecture and workshop series on ‘Method, methodology and critique in international law', organised at the Asser Institute.

[New publication] Autonomous weapons and the responsibility gap in the ICC statute

A new publication in the Journal of International Criminal Justice by Asser and IHEID researcher Marta Bo tackles the difficulties of establishing responsibility for war crimes after the deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the military. Bo’s article deals with the specific issue of the mens rea required to establish responsibility for the war crime of indiscriminate attacks, in the context of attacks performed with semi-autonomous weapons or with the support of artificial intelligence (AI) in targeting decision-making.

[Call for papers] Artificial intelligence: the new frontier of business and human rights

The Netherlands Network for Human Rights Research (NNHRR), coordinated by the Asser Institute, has a call for abstracts for an international workshop on Artificial Intelligence: The New Frontier of Business and Human Rights. We invite the submission of abstracts on the following four themes:

▪ Human rights as a legal check on AI
▪ The translation of business and human rights discourse into practice
▪ Embedding human rights compliance into AI products
▪ Using AI tools in the framework of human rights due diligence processes

[Updated programme] Masterclass: Investing in English-speaking Africa

During a two-day masterclass, Asser researcher Chukwuma Okoli will be joined by experts in the field of private international law such as Dr Pontian Okoli, Professor Elsabe Schoeman, Richard Frimpong Oppong, and Anthony Kennedy. They will offer you theoretical and practical insights into commercial law, private international law and transnational litigation. Among other topics, they will discuss the questions of jurisdiction, choice of court agreements, foreign currency obligations, and recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments. Knowledge of these topics in English-speaking Africa is essential for effective investment, as international commercial transactions on the continent grow.
