Storyteller, musician, poet, actor, writer, and music therapist, David Gonzalez, is a one-of-a-kind artist. He has created numerous productions that combine compelling drama, music, and multi-media; all of which enchant audiences nationwide with stories of love, hope, courage, and wisdom. Join us for an intimate conversation with David particularly focused on storytelling, but touching on everything from how he got his start to where he gets his ideas to talking to presenters about his work to premiering his recent semi-autobiographical one-man show Man of the House at the Kennedy Center last Fall. David Gonzalez

David Gonzalez (Writer/Producer/Performer) is the recipient of the 2011 International Performing Arts for Youth "Lifetime Achievement Award for Sustained Excellence." In 2010 Mr. Gonzalez was named a Joseph Campbell Foundation Fellow. In 2013 he was commissioned by the Kennedy Center to write and perform The Man of the House. He was nominated for a 2006 Drama Desk Award for "Unique Theatrical Experience" for his production of The Frog Bride at Broadway’s The New Victory Theater and has created numerous productions, including the critically acclaimed ¡Sofrito! with The Latin Legends Band, and MytholoJazz, both of which enjoyed sold-out runs at The New Victory Theater. Wounded Splendor was the result of a two-year residency and commission from the University of Maryland. Sleeping Beauty, co-commissioned by the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Brooklyn College and The McCallum Theater, premiered in March 2010 and has toured nationally for the past three years. David was a featured performer at the 2007 National Storytelling Festival and has performed at festivals in Spain, Switzerland, France, Costa Rica, Norway, Puerto Rico and throughout the United States. He also appeared for three seasons at the Royal National Theatre in London. David Kilpatrick

David Kilpatrick has been the Manager of Kennedy Center Theater for Young Audiences since 2007. He oversaw the program’s national touring initiative until 2012 and is now particularly focused on commissioning and developing new work for young audiences, managing in-house productions and national and international presentations. As part of KCTYA, he has produced more than 15 new plays and musicals for young audiences ranging from Mo Willems’ Elephant & Piggie’s We Are in a Play! to Quiara Alegria Hudes’ Barrio Grrrl! David also manages New Visions/New Voices, a week-long award-winning biennial Kennedy Center program for playwrights and theaters to stimulate and support the creation of new plays and musicals for young audiences and families. David received his Masters in Educational Theatre at New York University in 2002 and spent two years afterwards working in the Education Department for The New Victory Theater and then three years as Education Outreach Coordinator at Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia. Recently, David has been creating work for the very young with Arts on the Horizon in Alexandria, VA, including his non-verbal plays – Drumming with Dishes and The Young Spectaculars and the Front Yard Adventure.
