News and Events

Indulge me for a moment friends. I'm going to talk to you very quickly about two books I've mentioned before several times BUT we've got events with both the authors coming up and I think you'd really enjoy them.

First off, the new Sarah Waters, The Paying Guests, is finally out and it is so good. I can't tell you anything about it because it would spoil the surprise but trust me. You will sail happily through the first half and then absolutely tear through the second half in a desperate bid to find out what happens. Such tension!

She will be appearing at the Micheal Croft Theatre on Wednesday 1st October at 7.30pm. With a book set in 1920's London, and an author with her calibre of historical detail it should be absolutely fascinating and you should book asap as we fully anticipate this one being a sell out!

Tickets can be booked directly with the MCT online or we do have some in the shop if you want to pop in. We are also selling the brand new hardback at the discounted price of £15 in the shop, to give you plenty of time to read it before the event, in case you have any burning questions after finishing it!

The other book I've been harping on about for AGES and I'm sure you'll all get tired of me eventually but I enjoyed it so much that I can't help myself. Dave is also a big fan, and says the book is "an immersive slice of Americana that reads like the literary equivalent of having a cold beer with old friends".
We think Nickolas Butler is going to be a name for years to come, so be sure to catch him before anyone else at his first ever UK event.

Shotgun Lovesongs is about four friends who have grown up and grown apart but don't want to let go of their friendship and there is something so touching and engaging about the writing and the heart of this novel. Books set in cold American places are among my favourite, and after reading this I am very much of a mind to visit Wisconsin and listen to a lot of Bon Iver.

Nickolas Butler will be here on Tuesday 16th September at 7pm.

Tickets are £3, or you can get a ticket and a hardback copy of the book for £10 which I highly recommend doing because it's just lovely. Book online, or pop in and you can pick up your book at the same time! Tickets are selling quickly and it's in the shop so space is limited, so book soon if you want to come along!

We are delighted to confirm he will be in conversation with Sunday Express journalist Charlotte Heathcote who has this to say: "Shotgun Lovesongs explores the complex relationship between four old friends in a poetic novel that pays tribute to the power of music and nature."

Perhaps also of interest to note is that Nickolas Butler was discovered by the same editorial team as The Miniaturist, Burial Rites and Mrs Hemingway. They are constantly finding wonderful debut novels!

taxidermists daughter

Also! A reminder that Kate Mosse will be appearing at the Horniman Museum on Thursday 11th September from 6.30pm-9.30pm.

Her newest novel The Taxidermist's Daughter had life breathed into it during a visit to one of the Horniman's Taxidermy Late evenings. You can read her blog about the experience here.

And now the novel has come to fruition and we are delighted to partner with the Horniman and Orion Publishing to throw a Taxidermy Late style party in honour of Kate's book. You can experience all the delights the Horniman, plus live music, taxidermy demonstrations, food stalls, and Kate Mosse in conversation with Sandi Toksvig about her book, and signing copies.

You can book directly with the Horniman now and we highly recommend doing so, as we suspect this is going to be an event we will be talking about for months to come!

Tickets are £10 and the event is for over 18s only.
