Artist Statement

When I began writing the texts for the ERA Project, my priority was to honor my grandmother, Cecil Norton Broy (1890-1977). I wanted to highlight the work she and countless others have done on behalf of women thought the years. Cecil was the political chairperson for the National Women’s Party for 25 years and worked along side Alice Paul to pass the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). 100 years after it was introduced to Congress for the first time, the ERA has still not passed.

The ERA Project composer Rain Nox, and I also hope to spread word about the Equal Rights Amendment and the surprising fact that women continue to not be expressly written into our Constitution We hope to inspire thought and discourse about our individual roles in maintaining
the patriarchy and white supremacy. Even more, we want to inspire a movement that is able to unite despite the multitude of divisions that keep us from being able to come together and move forward in our work for equal rights. - Maureen Broy Popovich
