Out of School Hours Care- TheirCare- Parent Information Session

We are excited for TheirCare to be part of our community in Term 4. They will be running a Parent Information Session on Monday 28th August at 7pm. During this session parents will learn all about TheirCare and have the opportunity to ask questions. The flyer with the details is below and I will also send out a Compass notification closer to the day with the link for convenience. I have also attached the TheirCare Parent Handbook link to the Compass news alert, which provides families with lots of information about Their Care and how to register. I strongly recommend all families register, as you never know when you may need the service.

Year 5

In Year 3, 83% of students are in the Exceeding and Strong standards and in Year 5, 87% of students are either Exceeding or Strong. Our students are all fostering a love of reading and we thank families for encouraging this at home. Teachers have been building their capacity in the Readers Workshop Instructional Model and Ms Gould will share more on that below.
Next week, I will be sharing our achievements in Numeracy.

Congratulations Miss Di Roberto!

The MVPS community sends our congratulations to Miss Di Roberto who got engaged on the weekend to her partner Anthony! We wish you all the joy, happiness, and love during this very exciting time.

We love reading here at MVPS, and we especially love to see students reading books they love. Here are some thoughts from some of our students:

At MVPS, we use the Reader’s Workshop structure to teach reading. It has a focus on giving students agency over what they are reading and also time for purposeful reading. During the reading lesson, the teacher explicitly teaches reading strategies, using mentor texts. The students then practise using that strategy when reading their own just right books. Our students have personalised reading goals that they also work on during independent reading time and they are regularly revisited with the teacher during their one-on-one conference.

Nerissa Leung (OzLit Teacher) has written an informative blog post about Reader’s Workshop. Here is the link if you would like to learn more about it.

Book Week

by Giva, Media Academy

Hi book lovers! Book week is here and will run from the 19th of August to the 25th of August. In book week students and teachers get to dress up as their favourite book character for the special parade on Thursday the 24th of August at 9:10AM on the basketball courts.

For example, I might dress up as Hermione Granger, who is from the Harry Potter book. Book week is a week is a chance to get to read some new books that have been nominated as the best Australian books for that year. Here is an overview of two of the picture story books featured this year.

Market Day: Written and illustrated by Carrie Gallasch and Hannah Sommoville
This is a story about a girl who is given a coin to spend at the market. She thinks carefully about what to buy. She is tempted by the towering stacks of fruit, spinning rides and glass jars filled with sweets. But it’s a stranger who gives something to her without expecting anything in return, that helps her decide exactly what to do with her coin.

Frank’s Red Hat: Written and illustrated by Sean E Avery
Frank’s Hat is about Frank the penguin who lives in a world that is black and white. Frank is full of ideas, some are good and some… are not so good! But when Frank gets a colourful idea, there will be a few nervous penguins. Will they stop him from sharing it?

So, I hope you will enjoy the book week celebrations and I encourage you to read as many of these wonderful books as you can. We can’t wait to see the book character you come dressed as for Thursday’s parade!
