Trivia Question: How many states and how many countries has Gastineau Log Homes shipped log homes to?" (See the answer at the end of the newsletter.)

Focus this month: Consider These Smart Home Features to Use in Your New Log Home: How far we have come in 41 years! You would have been laughed at in 1977 if you had suggested that we would some day be able to do some of the things we talk about below! But with today's technology and internet available practically everywhere, your new log home in the country can be just as "Smart" or technically advanced as living in the city. And at a very reasonable price! Alexa, Echo and Google Home have introduced amazing new technologies at a reasonable price.

Door Locks: Smart door locks have made losing your keys a problem of the past. With smart home features that allow you to enter with a PIN code, you no longer have to worry about fishing the keys out of your bag or leaving them in the house. You can also remotely lock doors, get alerts when specific people enter or exit, and check the status of your locks from an app or website. Security and convenience are two strong reasons for upgrading your locks when you get a new smart home device. When building a new home, you can plan ahead by pre-wiring for easy installation in the future. Even in a log wall!

Outlets: Smart outlets allow you to control whatever is plugged in to the socket. Many people choose to use smart outlets for lighting to enable voice control upon entering a room. Another good use of smart outlets is to set timers or turn lights on or off when you’re not home, either for security purposes or to improve energy efficiency. Smart outlets can also be used to control various types of electronics and specific appliances such as air conditioners or space heaters.

Garage Doors: In many homes, the garage door is the first line of defense against home invasion. Many people also store valuable items such as tools, lawnmowers, and athletic equipment in the garage. How many times have you gone to work or on an extended trip and wondered if you left the garage door open? With smart home features, you can quickly find out whether the door is open or closed, receive alerts when the door opens, or close the door from wherever you are.

Heating and Cooling: Adjusting the thermostat before you leave an empty house is a great way to reduce energy usage, but walking into an uncomfortable home later is an unfortunate consequence. Smart thermostats allow you not only to create schedules, but also to remotely control systems so you can make adjustments when your plans change. Coming home early from work? No problem. Just log in to an app and turn the heat up so you can walk into a cozy home.

Security Cameras: Whether you live in an area with occasional thefts or just want peace of mind that your loved ones and valuables are protected, a security system is an excellent addition to any smart home. WiFi cameras with built-in motion sensors allow you to monitor movement within your home. Look for an infrared system that also allows you to capture footage at night.

Smart Appliances: Many manufacturers are now offering home appliances with smart features such as digital recipe storage in stoves, sensors in microwaves, and touchscreens to control settings on refrigerators and dishwashers. In addition to saving energy, these types of devices can also make your time in the kitchen more convenient and efficient.

If you’re thinking of building a new home, be sure to plan for smart home features. Even if you decide not to invest in a comprehensive smart home system right away, you can save money by planning for smart locks, outlets, and any other features you might use in the future.

Quote of the Month: "Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition." - Steve Jobs
