January 7th: The NY Port Ambrose Public Hearing

THIS IS THE ONLY NEW YORK HEARING FOR PORT AMBROSE LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas), a threat to New York's coastal communities and economies. This proposed marine facility would enable terrorist-attracting tanker ships to pull up to deepwater buoys and unload dangerous and polluting LNG. Not only is LNG 40% more polluting than even fracked gas (itself a climate changer 86 times worse in its heat-trapping effect than carbon dioxide), this project is suggested for the same location a proposed wind farm should go.

What is Port Ambrose?

A marine facility for off-loading LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) proposed for the New York shore. Buoys tethered to the ocean floor would connect to a proposed undersea pipeline. Not only would dredging for the pipeline create an environmental harm, potentially releasing a now-settled layer of toxins that had been dumped on the ocean floor decades ago; the tethers would continually scrape the ocean floor, preventing the marine ecosystem from recovering.

Why is it so risky?

If an LNG tanker is ruptured and the resulting vapor cloud ignited, experts predict a fire that would be hot enough to melt steel at distances of 1200 feet. Such vulnerability makes Port Ambrose an obvious terrorist target. To build such a facility near New York City, the busiest harbor on the East Coast, and near the flight paths of three major airports, is reckless. MORE DETAILS HERE.

Who’s behind Port Ambrose?

Liberty Natural Gas is a paper corporation owned by nameless backers with a Cayman Islands bank account, West Face Capitol–which is concurrently developing a similar project, Port Meridian, in the UK. Liberty has filed Port Ambrose as an import facility, but, given market trends and the fact that they have European holdings, it’s possible this project could be converted to export with the submission of a new application. Port Ambrose Could Mean Tankers Not Turbines

wind turbines

One of our big concerns with Port Ambrose is that it conflicts with one of the few areas off the New York coast where a wind farm might go. New York is one of the busiest harbors on the East Coast, and ocean real estate is taken up by many uses: shipping lanes prevent construction except for the green triangle shown on the map below. If the LNG port goes in first, it could put the future wind farm at risk.

Remember, as per the Jacobson plan, for New York State to go 100% renewable, we need to supply at least 40% of our power with offshore wind. And, because of policy windows that close this year, we need to ensure that no barriers to future offshore wind development get in our way. We must protect the ocean and all our future renewable energy options.

The LNG port (two red dots), shown on map above, is proposed for the same area as a proposed wind farm (green triangle). The purple triangles are reserved for shipping lanes.

What Else You Can Do: Get Your Rep On Board

Several legislators have already sent letters to Governor Cuomo asking him to veto this project, and to the Coast Guard asking for an extension to the comment period, and many will be present Wednesday to testify. But we need many more elected officials to become informed and responsive to this threat. If you live in New York and want this state to develop renewable energy, then Port Ambrose matters to you! Your state rep needs to come out against this, ASAP, and if you live on Long Island, your town board does too. We've created several sample letters for you and your rep. Read them all here.

PLEASE NOTE: State of The State Rescheduled

In light of the passing of Governor Cuomo's father, Mario Cuomo, the State of the State address and rally have been postponed until January 21st. More details will be posted as soon as available. Our sincere condolences to the Cuomo family.
