Truck of Goods to Deliver to Flint Victims

NEW YORK, NY-- The #BeYou Campaign shipped out to Flint, Michigan on July 7, 2016 to deliver loads of necessary goods for more than 300 families experiencing the Flint Water Crisis. Their send-off ceremony took place at 1148 Union Street, Brooklyn, NY from 9:30am-11:00am. Campaign supporters pitched in to help and dropped water, hand sanitizer, and other essential items to ensure a fully packed truckload to bring to people in need. News Channel 12 Brooklyn covered the story that aired on the same day at 11:30am.

From New York City to Seattle to Flint, many are helping to resolve the water emergency. Syrah Scott, founder of the #BeYou Campaign launched #BeYouNYC4Flint, a NYC citywide water drive to collect 10,000 bottles of water, hand sanitizer, baby wipes, and filters for the children and families experiencing the Flint Water Emergency. With the help of over 14 organizations, including a leading water filter company (Watercura), the Office of Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, and the Legendary Afrikan Poetry Theatre, BeYou has surpassed their donation goal. The collection campaign was a success, but getting the supplies to Flint was a huge dilemma. When the earlier transportation plans fell through, Syrah turned to her business colleague Michele Evans in Seattle, WA to help complete the mission. Michele reached out to family and friends across the nation for support to help with the transportation costs to deliver the vital supplies to Flint.

Flint City Hall with Mayor Karen Weaver & #BeYou Team (Clean Water for Flint Event)

After a tremendous effort to get the job done, the date to depart finally came & the #BeYou Team, a passionate group of eight change agents including the #BeYou Founder Syrah Scott, Michele Evans, Donald Dudley, Stella Dudley, Andre McDonnell, Joshua Walker, Kahlil Lewis, and Brianna Abdullah conquered its undertaking. They drove a 15-footer U-Haul truck from New York City to Flint and disbursed the goods on Friday, July 8, 2016 at the Flint City Hall early that morning. At this event, called ‘Clean Water for Flint’, residents received necessary household supplies, clean water, and Andre McDonnell, founder of It’s from the Sole, gave away hundreds of sneakers to children and adults. Joshua Walker of Avenue Music Group (AMG-ER) and his team interviewed and videotaped residents to capture the true essence of what is happening in their badly damaged community.

The team met with Mayor Karen Weaver, Chief of Staff Steve Branch, the Chief of Police, and Councilman Eric Mays to discuss their efforts and plans for coming back in the future to implement effective and efficient programs to help Flint residents. Each Council member received Watercura filters to test and Flint Channel 5 covered the event.

Flint, Michigan Water Crisis, Innocent Disaster Victims

It’s summertime and people are Hot and Thirsty. Grabbing a cold glass of water without concern or taking a shower to cool off is not an easy task. The people of Flint must drink and bathe in bottled water or hope the filters that they've been given by the city even work, because the water coming from their pipes is filled with lead and other harmful toxins; causing skin lesions, hair loss and other deadly illnesses.

Flint Mayor Karen Weaver said lead readings at 26 homes in the city were 10 times the federal limit-- too high to be treated by filters distributed by the state. At least 100 children have tested positive for high levels of toxic lead in their blood.

The problems began when Flint switched its water source from the Great Lakes to the Flint River. For more than a year, lead leached from the pipes because the city failed to add standard anti-corrosion chemicals to the water. The system switched back to Detroit late last year but the damage is already done. The city and government of Flint, Michigan failed its people. The community needs help, and it's time that more people step in to send the necessary goods over to Eastern Michigan.

Loren

The Loren Family & #BeYou Team

According to the Loren family, even after going through three filtration cycles the water still has sediment and can't be trusted. They were even given a point of entry household filtration unit and that too has not worked. Their entire family has been lead poisoned including four growing boys (ages 10-14), and recently because of high lead levels in her body, Tammy Loren has been given only 5 years to live; her organs are quickly shutting down causing major deteriorating health issues.

After nearly three years of suffering and heartache, the Flint Water Emergency has not been fixed. New pipes have not been laid, clean water is scarce, and water bottles and palettes cover some residential grounds of this impoverished city making it look like a huge garbage disposal. The problem has not been solved, and people are fed up and are quickly running out of options to keep their family safe. With news of the state of emergency soon to be lifted and lack of media coverage, help for these troubled children and families is far and few between.

The people of Flint are hopeless, worn out, and badly broken. Newscaster Rachel Maddox recently took a visit and was shocked to see all of the serious issues that were still plaguing the city of Flint, Michigan.

"I applaud the #BeYou Campaign for providing local leadership to the human crisis in Flint. The environmental and health consequences of the highly contaminated water affecting that city are beyond severe. I ask my fellow Brooklynites to continue to donate bottled water, filters, and hand sanitizer to our brothers and sisters in Flint", says Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams. Several organizations in New York City have joined in with the #BeYou Campaign to help with this federal emergency including the Office of the Brooklyn Borough President, It’s from the Sole, Yeva Don, J and R Symposium, The Afrikan Poetry Theatre, MDE Global Consulting, Chesterfield Services, iUrbanTeen, American Youth Officials (AYO), ISpitNYC, Hip Hop Retreat Week, Purposefully Pretty, Avenue Music Group-ER, Wash and Fold Super Laundry, G’s Restaurant, Flowers Physical Therapy, Patmar’s Bakery, and Super Dope Charities to name a few.

The children are our future and need our help. If you'd like to pitch in and help (organization or individual), or for media inquiries please email Thebeyoucampaign@gmail.com or call 917.651.5483. We are also accepting donations at www.GoFundMe.com/BeYouCampaign
