THE SUGAR ISSUE

Hello Health-Seekers,

With the mounting buzz about refined sugar’s tendency to rob the body of its ability to thrive, I decided to dedicate this month’s message to ‘the white stuff’, which is all too often deified in this country. I was disturbed by a rather alarming description of sugar’s impact on users. Sugar was described as an Anti-nutrient that steals other nutrients from the body as it gets digested. How, I thought, do Americans who on average consume 150 pounds of sugar per year not know how the Food Industry is distorting sugar’s true impact on our health and longevity?

The Film that'll Change How You Eat

It’s been known for years that processed sugar suppresses the immune system, promotes fat storage, instigates cravings, (wait, there’s more!) hijacks clear thinking, and wreaks havoc on blood sugar balance. With the recent national release of the documentary, FED UP, the conversation about sugar has reached a fever pitch.

See the movie the food industry does NOT want you to see. FED UP is in theaters now. Watch the trailer.

“Your brain lights up with sugar just like it does with cocaine or heroin. You’re going to become an addict.” -Mark Hyman, Chairman Institute of Functional Medicine

“There are 600,000 food items in America; 80% of them have added sugar.” -Robert Ludwig, Professor of Pediatrics, Univ. of California, San Francisco

I had some thoughts on the sugar epidemic and share my own struggle with sugar addiction on this recent blog post.

Don’t Sweat the Sweet Stuff

In this blog are tips for flipping the switch on sugar addiction and reclaiming your power over sugar, a substance revealed in FED UP, which is way more addictive than drugs. To support you, I have a free gift.

REMEMBER:

• Know the sugars that come from unlikely sources (ketchup, salad dressing, energy bars, cold cereal and bbq sauce). Read labels mindfully, make wise choices, and plan ahead.

• Focus on quality calories rather than counting calories.

• Sugar is a ritual that can be replaced.

• Eat more ‘plants’ (green leafy vegetables, raw/cooked colorful veggies, grains, beans, nuts and seeds) to curb cravings.

• Dehydration is a sugar trigger. Drink. Drink. Drink.

Best in plant-powered eating,
