AssistedSuicideS225

On Tuesday December 2nd Conservative Senator Nancy Ruth, alongside Liberal Senator Larry Campbell, introduced Bill S-225 which, if passed, would make assisted-suicide legal in Canada. Two days later the bill went to second reading.

The aim of the Senators is to have the bill quickly passed through the Senate to ensure the debate takes place in the House of Commons before the next election.

There are many concerns with S-225.

Other nations who have legalized assisted suicide have experienced a chilling slippery slope. For example, Belgium legalized assisted suicide in 2003. According to UK Mail Online, Belgium has seen a rise of 27% in the number of euthanasia cases alone in the last year (1816 cases in 2013). It also became the first country in the world this year to allow assisted suicide for children. The concern is that if S-225 passes Canada would be on track to follow in Belgium's footsteps.

Euthanasia Prevention Coalition Director, Alex Schadenberg recently wrote a critique in regards to the introduction of Bill S-225 that you can find here. He reports that, "legalizing physician-assisted death gives physicians, in law, the ultimate power to cause or assist the death of their patients. When abused, the result is the death of a vulnerable Canadian."

A SPECIAL LETTER FROM MP JOY SMITH:

Dear friends,

As you may have heard over the weekend, 25 Toronto City Councillors signed a letter to Premier Kathleen Wynne asking her to refer Bill C-36 to the Ontario Court of Appeal before any prosecutions take place and specifically asked that Premier Wynne 'direct police not to enforce any provisions' of Bill C-36. This letter was spearheaded by one Councillor in particular, Kristyn Wong-Tam.

It is alarming that 25 municipal elected officials would call for police not to enforce a law just passed by federal elected officials. By calling for police not to enforce any provisions, the councillors are tossing aside important tools that police use to arrest pimps and sex traffickers and essentially calling for full legalization of prostitution.

The Councillors and media also paid no regard to the voices of survivors who have been unanimous in their opposition to legalizing prostitution due to the harm it would inflict on vulnerable women. I have sent out an Op-Ed today calling for the councillors to stand up for marginalized and vulnerable women by opposing legalization.

Here are some key points:

Prostitution hurts Canadian communities and the most vulnerable Canadians, especially women.
Activities around prostitution are not harmful because they are illegal – they are illegal because they are harmful.
Survivors, women’s organizations and law enforcement have asked for buying sex to be criminalized to reduce demand and violence.
Legalizing prostitution is a direct attack on the fundamental rights and freedoms of women, girls and vulnerable people.
A truly progressive society encourages the equality and dignity of women and helps them to escape prostitution, instead of legitimizing prostitution.
Police need the tools in Bill C-36 to target violent pimps and sex traffickers.
Please take a moment to write to these Councillors to voice your outrage. Please also copy the Mayor of Toronto John Tory (who did not sign the letter), Premier Elizabeth Wynne, Minister of Justice Peter MacKay and the councillors who did not sign the letter.

You can find a full list of their email addresses on my website: Click here to go there now.

We must criminalize the activities of pimps and johns. The legalization of their activities is unacceptable to Canadians.

MY Canada is partnering with One Free World International (Rev Majed El Shafie) and V-Kol Media to help raise funds for needy families in Iraq this Christmas. As winter is upon them many of these families are currently living in tents and in need of blankets, clothing and other essential items.

Instead of buying your loved ones a sweater, gadget or gizmo this year why not consider making a donation to help needy families in Iraq on their behalf? When you donate we will mail you a special certificate (see below) that you can wrap and give to your loved ones this Christmas.

JOIN US IN THE FIGHT AGAINST E-BOLA IN WEST AFRICA:

From Faytene Grasseschi

It was my deep honour to spend some of my beginning years in Christian work in the back woods of West Africa, Liberia. The land, the people, and what God was doing there were all absolutely beautiful. Never in my life have I ever encountered a people who in the midst of profound struggle with things such as war, terror, hunger, disease and more had such joyful determination to overcome. I quickly fell in love with this nation and it's people. ... click here to read more ...
